Good one. I saw a video yesterday where Kier Starmer was saying how dreadful it was that some pensioners couldn’t afford to put the heating on. This was a couple of years back. He was, apparently, proud that the Liebour Party introduced the Winter Fuel Payment years ago …

None of those making the decision re' winter fuel payments have any trouble paying for their gas/electicity; having nice fat salaries paid for by of the rest of the country - pensioners included..
.
And you can bet that those MPs will get a nice hefty increase in their salary when that time of the year comes round.

Useful to remember too that the pensioner tax threshold (which threshold was historically just a wee bit higher for pensioners than non pensioners) has been frozen for several years. Being frozen way back when. allegedly to allow that threshold for the rest of the country to catch up to the frozen level of pensioners, whilst in the meantime it pushed many pensioners paying tax on their state pension and increasingly so... Of course that catchup hasn't happened as the tax threshold has been frozen for everyone for yonks now. Meanwhile any increases in state pension are continually eroded by the frozen tax threshold, resulting in more and more pensioners paying more and more tax on their pension. And incidentally when one reaches the ripe age of 80... one gets an additional payment - a fabulous sum of 80pence per week...; which of course counts towards the taxable income calculation... Oh such rich living we all enjoy...

But this the joke thread so perhaps comments of a political nature aren't really appropiiate here; unles one feels that current government fiscal policy etc. is a joke in itself...

During the 2017 general election campaign, Rachel Reeves shared a Labour poster from 1945 promising a decent pension with the caption: “Love this poster from 1945. This time again, it’s Labour who will stand up for pensioners, defending the triple lock and winter fuel payments.”

A week earlier Angela Rayner, now Deputy Prime Minister, (huh?) had said: “Pensioners will be worried with cuts to pensions, death tax for social care, winter fuel allowance cuts, Tories - the nasty party #ToryManifesto”.

How two-faced is that?

It's a joke alright - in very bad taste.

Imagine the outrage and righteous indignation of Reeves & Raynor if the Tories had scrapped the winter fuel allowance.

Not only did they not do that, in the winter of 22/23, in addition to retaining the Winter Fuel Allowance, they gave every household £400, not means tested. Doesn't sound very 'nasty' to me. Furthermore, when it comes to balancing the books, during the Pandemic, the Tory government (AKA 'nasty party') distributed £68.9 billion of furlough payments to 1.3 million employers covering 11.7 million individual jobs, and £28.1 billion over five grants to 2.9 million self-employed people.
