Hello all
I am using a Powerbase router. Speed 10,000 -28,500 and a Boxjoint TCT bit to cut !/2" finger joints but as the wood comes into contact with the cutter the router speed drops as if loosing power. The cutter is brand new and very sharp. I tried a 1/4" straight cutter in the router and the router did the same. Is the router faulted? I have also replaced the power switch to the router. I do think its a shame to discard a router but it is sometimes cheaper to do that.

With a router, it's always best to take several shallow cuts rather than to attempt to cut all the material in one go.

Cheers

Hi Paul
yes I did try shallow cuts but got the same behaviour from the router.I have replaced the router in my table with a 1/4 router and this is cutting with no adverse effect at all.
It is reccommended that the 1/2" box joint router bit is set at no more than 13000 revs. There are 5 speed settings on this router and it has been set at number 2 and 3 which have given the same adverse behaviour.I think it must be a problem with the router but still at a loss to decide what. I'm not very clever with electricity

sorry about that. 9 out of ten for spelling.(due to my hangover)
The wattage is 1250 and the brushes have just been changed.

Try other power tools to see if they have the same problem, a hand held circular saw cutting 2" or 3"hardwood with the grain for example, report back

whats a rotuer?

It is a hand held Electric Motor device used for making shapes on wood edges.Hope that helps?? Oh an the bigger the router bit the slower the speed setting, unless you want to burn the wood.....

I think thats normal for a cheaper router, the Triton routers have an automatic upping the speed function so that when load is applied it keeps the speed you set.

If its slowing down add more power, go up to 5 as when in contact with the wood its slowing down so you'll probably get 4's level of power if that makes any sense?

Whats the wood?

Hi again
I tried another router and no adverse behaviour. The speed up to about 25000 was set but with the same problem. I have to say that because it was a cheap router I've more than had my moneys worth. So today i bought another and we'll see how it goes. Thanks every body for all the imput and good luck to you all.
