Finishing issue

Hi Guys

Can clear spray lacquer be used on a bowl previously finished with a wax polish? I don’t want to start stripping everything back if I can avoid it.

I have just tried it on an old Paduak platter I have hanging around. I wait and see what happens.

I think it's OK as long as the wax has cured for a few weeks, all the solvents gone.

If you've got wax under a finish it's not going to stick. If it doesn't come up with fish eyes with the first coat I would be surprised. You could try rubbing hard with an acetone soaked cloth and scotch pad which might give you enough raw wood for the laquer to stick to. A thin shellac sealer coat might help things. One of the nice things about using wax is that virtually nothing sticks to it!!

Melamine gloss lacquer appears to have stuck to the platter ok. I’ll give it a bit longer to see if there are any downside reactions.

True if it's a blended wax with any form of silicone in it. Natural wax blends seem to be OK as long as they are left long enough.

Nothing goes on top of wax except for another wax.

I have seen mention of sanding sealers and lacquers adhering to wax because the solvents in the lacquer etc. dissolves the wax so you end up with a single layer of both wax and lacquer combined. The official line is that you shouldn't do it but it might be worth a try. I know where I apply sanding sealer over a section next to an area alread sealed and waxed there doesn't seem to be any adverse effects.

Hard wax can certainly be overcoated with shellac, I have been doing it for years.
Wax polish I think ought to be removed as best you can for a long lasting finish. Anything containing silicone should be avoided like the plague.
