Glad it ended well, and I wouldn't have felt embarrassed calling in the gas board etc, even if it was just a bit of scaffold.
Within minutes of beginning digging my workshop footings, I hit what appeared to be gas or water pipe. Cue MUCH swearing, and careful excavation with a trowel (Time Team-stylee), it turned out to be a jumbo cold chisel, left behind by someone. So it actually ended up being quite useful in making stake holes for the concrete shuttering...
