Surprisingly doesn't appear Richard Burgess does either!
As you have the plate measurements, get some local engineering outfit to cut one out on their plasma cutter,
And drill and countersink you're self, Looks like the carpet will cover anyway!

Thanks Rodders, that's an option. I won't know what I'm up against until I can get the boards up. I might be able to halve it onto a joist. The customer wants it done quickly so just trying to speed the process up if I can get something like the zip bolt type.

I'll probably do as you suggest and get some plates made up.

I would lift the boards where the post has to fit and then under the boards fix a length of timber (4"x2") where the post has to fit and replace the boards.

Then mark the boards where the post has to fit and bore a hole to the diameter of the bottom of the post then glue in the post.
I did this at my daughters house about 20 years ago and it has never given any trouble

Thanks Alan. I'm going back to the job next week to lift some boards. I'd considered fitting a substantial noggin if there's nothing to fix to, or I may get a plate cut.

Thanks for the input guys.

Graham, I've used one of these before https://www.s3i.co.uk/modular-505-wall- ... fixing.php

Obviously the base of the post needs to be routed or chopped out to allow the flange to sit flush and then bored for some kind of dowel or 'tenon' in effect.

When I did this I bored out the newel to take an M2 threaded bar, then bored wider for the first 2 inches for some dowel that matched the internal diameter of the flange. Dowel and bar then epoxied into newel and the flange plate screwed down and the whole lot epoxied onto that.

Bit of a palaver I know but it worked.

Thanks, but as you say a palavour. I need to get it boxed off in the day as there are toddlers in the house. I'm going back on Tuesday to lift some boards. I'll probably stitch in some 6x2 and fix it to that.

Thanks Andy. I use those for connecting the rail to the post but I need to fix a post to the floor where there wasn't one before.

There's more
Should have said look at the rest of the pictures for the newel fixing
Or maybe you did 8)

Ah yes,I'd missed that Andy. I have seen them elsewhere. It assumes that you've got something solid to screw it into. I'm not sure if it does.

Mission completed. I managed to stitch the newels onto the joists. Glue and screws made them rock solid. In the before picture the wood on the rails is mahogany and guess what, the customer has asked me to get rid of it for him to save him cutting it up and taking it to the tip. Yummy! The rails also ran down the stairs. No idea why the before pic has shown up twice, it won't let me delete it mods??

The New stairs are looking good in the pics, A definite improvement on the previous fixture, And all that nasty mahogany to dispose of!
