Extreme Birdhouses ( The Wellington Hotel )

Hi everyone
Spring is here and it,s great to be working back outside again.

This is a birdhouse i started last year but it got put on the shelf until now.

It is made from 120 year old reclaimed barn timber and has over 80 apartments.

Can't help but say I think your nuts though! In a nice way, obviously!

On a more serious note bird houses should normally not be placed near to each other as it may cause fighting and they may end up killing each other. Literally. Only a few species actually enjoy nesting in close quarters. So, I hope you have a lot of sociable birds in your neighbourhood otherwise you may have 100 empty rooms in your Hilton Hotel.

I have had this first birdhouse up for almost three years and i have never had problems with birds dying in them , on them or around them.
I get a lot of sparrows nesting in them and never had any problems.
I hope i don,t have to bring out the baby pictures. :lol:

Great pictures of some of your paying guests! It is good to see that they seem to get on so well, sparrows shouldn't have any problems, though. Other birds need anything up to about 1 km² between nest sites to ovoid territorial punch-ups occurring.

How in gods name do you lift them up onto the post? Do you have a JCB backhoe and a sling or something?

Thank you everyone for all the very nice replies.

I use a good size farm tractor to lift the birdhouses in place.
It has no problem lifting these monster houses.

I think they are absolutely fabulous. Probably a product of a twisted mind but great fun nonetheless.

I would love to see some WIP's as I cannot begin to imagine the internal structure of these beasts. Do you have any part complete pictures?

Here are a few progress pictures.

I start by drawing a layout on a piece of plywood.

I use a finish nailer to nail everything together.

I cut all the windows and doors all at the same time.

The insides are built in 3 sections and are removable.
They go in after the house is built.
