Just been into the workshop and with the outside temp at 2.2degC and a howling wind, the workshop is a balmy 15.9 with no heating on. Not too bad I think bearing in mind that the up and over door isn't the best.

Just shows what good insulation in the rest of the structure can do. 10 minutes with the rad on and it's already gone up 2.5deg, so just ready for me to go in there for the day after a bit more browsing and a couple of phone calls.

2 weeks holiday, woohoo! :D Let's see how much workshop time I actually get in that 2 weeks...

Very little I suspect Mark. The temptation to watch daytime TV is too high

Unfortunately just after posting this I saw a meeting request from my head of IT to an urgent meeting. On the call now and they are telling us that out of 88 people on the call, up to 25 'roles' will be gone by Jan 28th!

Great start to my two weeks holiday! :(

Once the call finishes I am off to smash up wood with my bare hands!!!

Crap. Worst nightmare, that. Why do they always seem to do this just before Christmas, and make sure you won't know until after Christmas.

I work in a financial company who announced 35000 job cuts in the next 3 years, so that call is always a fear...

Sincerely hope you aren't affected by this - I have a lot of sympathy, especially knowing you've a newborn to bring up as well as the 1yr old. Best of luck!

Sense the sarcasm Steve.

That's not good news Mark. It's a bit like that at our place recently. Even more of a worry for me as I'm clearly not an asset to them at the moment.

Go plane the crap out of something

Abso-feckin-lootly mate. Just finished the call now, lots of doom and gloom as you can imagine.

Going to give SWMBO the good news now, then plane/kick/chop/saw the sh!t out of whatever I can find in the workshop (so long as it doesn't have a pulse, hopefully)...

Yep, no way that anything with a tail is getting fired up now, not in this mood!

That's tough, really tough. These things tend to happen before Christmas so that the financial aspects are cleared up before the year end in March. Xmas +90 days notice period is approx 31st March - year end.

Normally I would agree with that, but our financial year is October 31st, so just finished. This smacks of savings on budget from the start of the year.

Evenings not much better either. Peep Show seems to have finished. Armstrong and Miller's new series is very disappointing. The Thick of It is very enjoyable if a tad worrying. And how C4 got away with Campus I'll never know. The PC-following timid BBC would run a mile from that one. I just hope the rest of the series is as good as Episode One. Oh..and Spooks, of course.

Fingers crossed for you, Mark. I've been made redundant twice and twice there has been something come along pretty quickly and even better. So if it does happen to you, I hpe it all pans out well. Time to re-acquaint yourself with all your old 'mates' from previous incarnations.

Roger,

I thought that this might be a one off? Am I wrong? It was so obviously from the same team as Green Wing that I can't wait for more. After I watched the programme it trailed an altogether different one for the same slot next week......

I've worked out that the only way to make a really great comedy series is to have a colur in the title........Green Wing, Black Book, Red Dwarf!

Oh rats...I think you're right. Maybe it was a taster to gauge audience reaction. Think the same team did Smack the Pony. All in the same delectable, surreal(?) genre. Anyone of a PC-disposition should look away.

I honestly haven't turned the TV in on months. When wifey's here it's blaring out the usual white trash reality soap opera nonsense. I've learned to tune out of it completely.

Soory to hear your bad news. If it's any consolation I know someone it happened to and they found a similar job four weeks later, so not all gloom and doom.

TV
Haven't watched it for over a year. For me about 95% of it is utter garbage. If there is anything I want to watch I do it on iplayer, catchup, on demand etc.

Last Friday afternoon, I watched.................. Jeremy Kyle.
I'd heard of it so I thought I'd see what the fuss was about.

It's like driving past a car crash

I truely feel sorry for the sub-humans that participate

I don't feel sorry for them Jim, they're being paid like any other job. It's the mugs that watch that have no hope. TV is just one big soap opera....and it's evil.

Whilst 95% is unwatchable cr*p, there is a danger of baby & bathwater here.......I wouldn't be without Big Cat Diary, Natural World, Life, the occasional Horizon etc. Scrapheap Challenge used to be on the list.......

Anyway, how did we get from Mark's warm workshop into the critique of the current TV offerings?

Mike

Big Cat Diary, especially, is all scripted and incredibly dumbed down. If you want documentaries with integrity, you have to go to the specialist channels. The ones that don't blow their budget on annoying presenters. Scrapheap challenge got boring quickly, it's obviously pre-arranged and pre-planned since the second or third series.
