But the OP's daughter was not speeding according to the police, the 'problem' was that their radar (or probably number recognition camera) system could not automatically read the number plate.

We quite often have vans with loads of cameras around Portsmouth along with loads of police (many on motorcycles) 'automatically' checking for valid road fund licences - if you're not on the sysem they pull you over for further investigation.

I must admit that I'm surprised that this alleged film covering the plate actually has any effect. I've seen reviews of many of these types of things with experimental results showing how ineffective they all are.

I think you might have struck oil, It an oldish vehicle M reg and perhaps their sytem wasn't up to scratch and I'm wondering if there is nothing wrong with the number plate at all and they just wanted an excuse to stop for reasons you have mentioned.
