Lay one edge of the metal over the other (as they will be when added to the plywood) and cut them together. That way if the cut isn't perfect both edges will be the same and nest together.

I'll do that. Was chatting to a welder who suggested getting a straight edge and running the blade along it. I probably have a random bit of wood I could use which would work.
