A bloody mess, a racking unit fell down.
So I went for a bit of breakfast, to find there was no bread. so.

As I had the mixer out and I knew a friend was coming over I made scones.

But you can not live on bread alone.

Something very different today, the year R playground have needed new mud and sand pits for a while and I've finally got school to let me rebuild them properly instead of making wooden frames that rot away in a few years, last week I ripped out the rotten sleepers (some are oak and have been put aside for turning) and set the footings for both, this morning I managed to motivate myself to get up early and go get started, here they are so far

It's been a very long time since I've done any brickwork so it took a while to get going, about 6 hours to hand mix the mortar (miraculously made the exact amount needed in 1 mix) and build both pits, next will be to wrap them in some AstroTurf left over from a repair done to one of our adventure playgrounds and cap the pits off with decking boards, they should look really good when done.

I can't speak for your school's Senior Management Team, Stig, but our prep school ruled out masonry for pits because of the (relatively) sharp edges of breeze block, compared to 'timmer'. The point was raised that, given the function of the pits, ickle kidlewinkles would be in direct contact leaning into them that clothes - and epidermis - would get scratched and damaged....ever had to face an irate mother?
You.may find you will be asked to 'rim' the top edge in timber to avert the Management Team actually having to placate said bad-tempered Mommas....you have been warned! 😎😄

I think that's what the astro turf and decking boards a for 😉

Didn’t Stig just mention Astro turf cladding and deck board topping?

Edit: must read full thread before replying…

As Pat and Paul state above, the pits will be wrapped in AstroTurf and capped with decking boards, no sharp / scratchy edges and it will look good 😜😜😜😜

This post reminds me when we built seats for kits at school out of old sleepers....
Uh oh. Bad choice, we had the tar come out of the wood on hot hot days .... ended up putting plastic grass on them
Luck was the parents helped build so we’re very understanding as they did “see” the problem at the time either
Lol

Spent a few hours cleaning up out there this morning, would have done it yesterday but a severe headache kicked in (always does when working at ground level or exerting myself, docs can't find why), once swept and tidied I grabbed a couple of the AstroTurf offcuts, unfortunately they're about 2m short of being able to wrap all the way so I cut them to fit 2 sides then split along the middle so one piece still does one pit, they're a little oversized so I can fix in place and trim to size, just have to come up with a way to cover the joints on the 2 corners, I have a stack of 2x1 cedar left over from some fencing so might use those on all of the corners and maybe a strip in the middle too if I have enough.

Starting to look like something from telly tubbies😂 but looking good

Looking good Stig, hope your efforts are appreciated! I wonder if the effort put in to infrastructure is ever mentioned to the users.... let's hope that one day they pass the favour on. Knowingly or not.
At 4 and 5 years old I don't think the users have the capacity to appreciate much beyond wow factor and fun factor 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪, plenty of parents commented positively on Saturday while their kids played football though 😊

I’ve been back at my lads of late the builders left an awkward gap at the end of the bath 380mm wide, as with most modern houses storage is in short supply so it was decided on a full height cabinet to maximise this space.
After cutting panels to size & edge banding I figured it would be as easy to assemble the cabinet on site so I set up a couple of trestles in their kitchen & did the dominoing & drilling in there.

All the parts were then taken up into the bathroom & screwed together with confirmat screws,I figured this would be the easiest way to assemble the cabinet in such a confined space especially as it had to be built upright.

As the side of the unit faced into the bath & even though it the opposite end to the shower I thought it best to tile it, first lining it with Hardiebacker board.
