My Grandfather kept his horse and "Leeds" cart (I remember a Pony Trap too) on an Allotment!
During the General Strike, to make it bit of cash, he used it for general light haulage. He got found out and what ever Strike Money they received then was stopped. Hard times - my Mum remembers they survived on porridge and what ever they could grow. Her Mum had to take in washing and shoe soles repaired with cardboard.
Big treat was a stew using 6 pennies of meat scraps and veggies.
