It appears that Thos. Flinn & Co. have got things (almost) sewn up on the UK quality handsaw front. Whether you go for Pax, Roberts & Lee, Lynx, &c., they are probably made by the same people, of the same steel?? The Pax ones look good, but I wonder if the difference to their cheaper cousins is anything more than cosmetic?
I recently bought a 22" 10 tpi Victor panel saw from Axminster Tools. Modestly priced at £52.50, but properly sharpened, skew backed, taper ground and (despite the fact that Axminster don't mention it in the publicity) - breasted. Nasty handle though, but what really matters is the metal: I want it for sawing, not displaying on the mantlepiece!
How good the steel quality is, time will tell; any views?
Anyway, I shall customise the handle to look like a proper old fashioned one anyway and hope to have acquired a nice saw for modest outlay.
