Very upset to get an email today saying the axminster newcastle store has permanently closed. Was such a great resource, I had planned to go there next week. Does anyone know what happened? The email just said there were dramatically increased costs. Does anyone know of any other woodworking stores in the north east?

This doesn't bode well for their other stores considering how recently Basingstoke and Nuneaton were shut, standalone Axminster was moved to the warehouse and now Warrington and Newcastle shut.

Indeed it doesn't. Seems they're headed to online only. I didn't realise they were struggling, to a relative newbie like me they seem to be a great business.

I think they've lost their way a little bit, they got heavily into tool and machine manufacturing, they dumped the premium brands they were selling in favour of their own, some of which, particularly the hand tools aren't that good. Do you remember when you could go into one of their stores and see all of the major brands on sale?
They've also "let go" of some, if not all, of their demonstrators, Colin Way springs to mind.

Hi menatarms

I’ve never been before but woodsmith in Whitley bay is somewhere I’d like to go but finding the time with 2 young kids is tricky!! If you do end up going let me know what it’s like :)

Cheers
Pete

Well you learn something every day. I'm in Whitley Bay occasionally as I have relatives there and never knew that shop existed. I'll definitely pay a visit but the range of products available looks very small and a bit specialised.

I had no idea it existed! I looked at their website and I'm not sure it's for me, seems very wood turning and axe focussed, but will try to check it out some time.

There is Greenvill Crafts in Harrogate - Woodturning tools & supplies (inc wood blanks) and authorised retailer of Record Power, Robert Sorby, Nova and Chestnut Products

In the last few years I have been to 3 Axminster stores - Cardiff, High Wycombe and Axminster.

All were bereft of customers in the store - perhaps 2 or 3 at any one time. Stores cost a lot of money to stock, employ staff, pay rents etc etc. The reality is they simply do not have sufficient footfall to make them remotely economic.

Even if they regarded the store as a showroom rather than a place to sell from, buyers of large and expensive items would tend to decide what they want, go home and look for the best price online. It is also often cheaper in both time and money to simply get stuff delivered than go and pick it up.

It is the hobbyist and small business end of the market which I suspect mast regrets that loss of the stores. Like me, I suspect most want to look, see, feel before parting with the hard earned.

To enjoy the benefits of real stores, sadly the users need to pay. With the internet accessible to all most are not prepared to do so. The days of the "proper store" are numbered.

I think they've lost their way a little bi
Back in the early 2000s I used to buy very frequently from Axminster -that was as somebody running a joinery shop with half a dozen staff

their catalogue along with Scott and Sargeant and Wealdons were my goto places for almost everything tool wise

but when they stopped the catalogue I found the website very difficult to navigate and they seem to stop selling stuff that I used to buy, or where they did it was too expensive

from maybe 2012 onward I almost never bought anything from them

I have to say though, they have been a great company whenever I have needed customer service. I once had a floor standing pillar drill (one of their white range -Chinese) and the up and down table mechanism stopped working, it was a worn worm gear..........I was amazed they could sell me another one and they charged £3.60 for it.

Which is a shame as I can remember them when they used to do adverts in The Woodworker magazine.

Woodsmith don't do much turning equipment/tools (they do a treadle lathe). It's mainly carving and woodcraft type of kit. I've never seen so many different types of axes and hatchets!

Does anyone know who the Newcastle store were getting their handles and bottle openers from? I know they are made locally but the staff wouldn’t give the company name. Cheers

Hi Keith the company is called The Cracket and are based in Northumberland, a small shop but well worth a look in, the iron mongery is good quality loads in stock and some good prices too, they are also online but definitely worth a look.

Hi Keith - what bottle openers do you buy ? - I might be able to help you if you buy the ones that I have seen in the NE store before it closed
