Very upset to get an email today saying the axminster newcastle store has permanently closed. Was such a great resource, I had planned to go there next week. Does anyone know what happened? The email just said there were dramatically increased costs. Does anyone know of any other woodworking stores in the north east?

This doesn't bode well for their other stores considering how recently Basingstoke and Nuneaton were shut, standalone Axminster was moved to the warehouse and now Warrington and Newcastle shut.

Indeed it doesn't. Seems they're headed to online only. I didn't realise they were struggling, to a relative newbie like me they seem to be a great business.

I think they've lost their way a little bit, they got heavily into tool and machine manufacturing, they dumped the premium brands they were selling in favour of their own, some of which, particularly the hand tools aren't that good. Do you remember when you could go into one of their stores and see all of the major brands on sale?
They've also "let go" of some, if not all, of their demonstrators, Colin Way springs to mind.

Hi menatarms

I’ve never been before but woodsmith in Whitley bay is somewhere I’d like to go but finding the time with 2 young kids is tricky!! If you do end up going let me know what it’s like :)

Cheers
Pete

Well you learn something every day. I'm in Whitley Bay occasionally as I have relatives there and never knew that shop existed. I'll definitely pay a visit but the range of products available looks very small and a bit specialised.

I had no idea it existed! I looked at their website and I'm not sure it's for me, seems very wood turning and axe focussed, but will try to check it out some time.
