Hi all,

Yet another job featuring Mahogany knobs, only a bit different this time!!

I received the sample in the post from the customer and was informed that the knob threads directly into a chest of draws. No problem thinks I, I will contact my friend John Berkeley and borrow one of his coarse chasers, he's bound to have one to match...

...only way to match it properly is to carve it by hand comes the reply from John - D'oh!! (homer)

Out come my carving tools and, after a bit of carving, filing and careful matching I have a pair of knobs. A couple of coats of button polish, a bit of wax and I have these:

I had 2 main worries. First that the thread wouldn't match and second that the colour wouldn't match as my new ones are rather redder than the somewhat faded original. The day after I sent them off however I get an email from the customer saying that they are delighted and they screwed straight in, no problems and match beautifully.

Another satisfied customer!!!

Cheers,

Richard

Bloody show off. Coming round here showing off his knobs

Great work Nobby!! err sorry Richard     .
I dont know anything about threading but it must take a lot of skill to hand chase as opposed to using tools.
Lovely work Richard would love to see how you thread by hand.
Any chance of a Utube demo :?: :?: . REgards Boysie.

good lord! Carving a thread by hand, and a small one at that. 8)

I have tried and found I can just about chase a thread on my metal lathe but my wood lathe is too fast.
I am most impressed. =D> well done!

As has been said Richard. This is real skill.

Great work

Thanks for your comments guys.

A You Tube vid is a good idea but I'd probably have to get a camera first   !!

The threads were carved by hand with the lathe stationary using a combination of a triangular saw file and V carving tools... and lots of stopping and comparing to the original!! My coarsest chaser is 6tpi and this is more coarse still so it was the only way!

Time taken was roughly 1/2 hour to turn the knobs and about 1 1/2 to carve the two threads, plus some finishing time so maybe 2 1/2 to 3 hours total.

Cheers,

Richard

blooming heck Richard. I admire you for taking this time to make these. This is what them out there just can;t fathom, just how long skilled work takes. Mind you these people obviously did which means there are some people who still want quality.
