Supply and demand is your case Paul, as your aren't a domestic sparky per se, so i reckon its difficult to draw comparisons. In my joinery shop some days i can make a lot of money if i am doing commercial but i sweat for this. but i am the domestic side its difficult sometimes for me to make it pay.
Whereas yourself a breakdown could be costing the company 10 times an hour what they would pay you to fix it.

I always find it depends on how much you know about it yourself as the level of what you are charged. in my workshop i needed a few more sockets, 16amp etc, I did all the wiring myself, left the cases open and the tails to be fixed into the board, called a sparky mate, he checked my wiring, closed the cases, connected the tails etc etc, he charged me 40 quid. i reckon it saved me about 300 quid.
