Supply and demand is your case Paul, as your aren't a domestic sparky per se, so i reckon its difficult to draw comparisons. In my joinery shop some days i can make a lot of money if i am doing commercial but i sweat for this. but i am the domestic side its difficult sometimes for me to make it pay.

Whereas yourself a breakdown could be costing the company 10 times an hour what they would pay you to fix it.

anyway back on thread.

I always find it depends on how much you know about it yourself as the level of what you are charged. in my workshop i needed a few more sockets, 16amp etc, I did all the wiring myself, left the cases open and the tails to be fixed into the board, called a sparky mate, he checked my wiring, closed the cases, connected the tails etc etc, he charged me 40 quid. i reckon it saved me about 300 quid.

It cost me just under £800 for full works to the workshop.

here's an idea of what's in there.

a 12 output consumer unit with armor core cable to the house with new consumer unit in house,
2 lighting setups (inside and out),
12 double 13A outlet sockets,
3 16A machine outlets. 1 with direct isolator,
Internal fluorescent lighting ( 2 x twin 8ft with diffuser and 1 6ft twin with diffuser)
Full security system with door trips and infrared sensors, etc.

Worth every penny. the consumer unit in the workshop is an updated unit providing some extra safety features including audible alerts to fuse trips, etc. does me great.

My sparky has been back and forth improving on things for my requirements and does a pretty decent job. ok he made things a little cheaper for me by not using trunking in certain areas. not much of a worry.

Many thanks for all your replys. I think I'm basically looking at nearly as much for the sparks as the shop!! but needs must when we're finally settled (not in the near future now) I will have my dream shop to play in! (I never had a wendy house so I'm gonna make up for it!!!)
