Help anyone?

I plan to make scooter-type motorbike for my nephew out of plywood. Have some ideas for the construction, but I need wheels. I'm thinking of 300mm/12" (or so) things with tyres (ideally, but not essentially) pneumatic.

I thought ... naively ... kids bikes, so tried bicycle shops when searching on-line ... found LOADS of suppliers for whole bicycles (and advice about choosing bikes for a child), but no sources of just the wheels. Searched elsewhere and found car wheels, wheels for bins, machinery, castors, wheel barrows, wheel chairs, etc (most of which want to sell me industrial quantities) ... but not found anything really close to what I'm looking for ...

I know it's not woodwork specifically - but has anyone been here already?

Can't you buy an old kid's bike from the small ads - or just walk round the streets on bin day? Use the wheels and bin the rest.

what about making the wheels out of ply and fitting tyres to them?

Yes or if you don't get tyres that fit you could use a timing belt from a car as i have used these in the past to make wheels/treads for play lawn mowers

I'd offer to turn you some wheels, but I think you already have the facility to do that ;)

Maybe you have already seen these replacement barrow wheels here, only £9 each for pneumatic tyres and proper metal hub....

I'm not sure what you have in mind but they're what I imagine I'd look for if I was to try something similar... :)

I look forward to the WIP ;)

Made these using just a router may give you an idea
About 9" dia to fit the motorbike rocker in my Avatar

Dalboy - that is one FANTASTIC rocker! Lucky kid you have!

Just another idea for source of wheels and stuff...

I belong to freecycle.org....you may be familiar with it.

Every time I get a batch of emails there are either kids bikes or breast pumps...

I think the former would be a great free source!
