I am often intrigued and interested by our membership which gradually changes over the months/years.

Periodically, i have polled the membership to get an idea of the demographic and because it is just plain interesting!!

So, why do you follow this great hobby/job?

Entered mine - I like making things using my hands (also I love wood, but can only tick one box)

Like using hand tools - the sounds, the smells, the feel - it's a blast.
But more than anything, I like the challenge of rendering sound and form out of tree carcasses.
Cheers
Steve

Tricky one - there's at least four apply

But went for "just like making things (anything)"

There should be an option:

To get away from the Mrs'

In all seriousness, I think for me personally, it's the challenge and the learning process I enjoy.

All of them apply except number 2, but even then saving money is a bonus.

Almost all of the options apply to me but I voted DIY because that's what I mostly do. I have recently built and fitted my own kitchen which means having to use a fairly wide range of skills, not all (or many) of them woodworking. At the end of the day it's the satisfaction of creating things (Oh, can I have another vote please?)

I can't vote for just one.....too many apply!

As I regularly tell my students, that is the where the skill lies, chosing the most important/relevant/appropriate  Surely one is dominant?

First equal would be #'s 1, 4, 5 and 10.

As I used to tell my clients, there isn't always a right answer. There can be many right answers or maybe even none, in which case apply the most appropriate sub-optimal solution for the time being. I suppose you can tell I spent almost 40 years in the IT industry!

I think i may have voted for my most appropriate sub optimal solution, although to be honest, i have a feeling that would be something used to clean contact lenses. :?
I ticked the first box, although as with others, i wanted to tick more than just one box.
It would be interesting to know the level of woodworking, (skill, ability, aspiration etc) of the members on here, from my point of view, just to see if i am the only one at the bottom of the ladder. Maybe this has been done already.
In fact re - reading what i have typed i wonder if i might have phrased that last bit a little better, although my grey matter is on strike just now. Anyway, you get the picture.

I notice that theres no votes yet for the "There's nowt on the telly" category.

It's not why I do it but I couldn't agree more if it were a statement.

I went for the 'I like to make my own furniture (and other stuff)'. But a few others that are there also apply to me.

I had no interest in woodwork at school but, after realising that my A-levels weren't gonna take me to where I wanted to be, I enrolled in a Carpentry & Joinery course, just as something to do. Something to try. I went on to enjoy the course and complete three successful years (this was two years ago).

I haven't quite had the same amount of luck in the job front, so I started woodwork at home, really, only because I felt that some of my power tools and stuff were going to idle waste; not doing anything. Of course, I still had to buy even more kit for the workshop!  :D

I'm now in the first year of a Furniture Studies/Cabinet Making course, while still searching for the right job at the same time. I hope to build on my existing skills with this very expensive course, even if I don't take it on and in to my future working life. :)

'twas really tongue in cheek (I find the TV tedious in the extreme and watch virtually none - a good book or play is much preferred), but it would be interesting to see if anyone owns up to that being the reason

I've gone for thr first one becasue i think making your own furniture give you a real sense of satifaction, like other forum members I think there are a lot there that apply.

I just like making things although most involve wood (boat building). I also like fixing things. My daughter once told her school friend "If my dad can't fix it - it really is broke". My proudest moment :D
