I just like being creative in the literal sense of the word  Prefer making items of worth and beating the big boys at it.

Can you add - its my living?

I think that Tony is ignoring the pro woodworkers here.

Like Tim says, I do it because it's my livlihood. I also enjoy it, so that puts me in a very lucky position.

End of the day though, if I wasn't being paid, I probably wouldn't do it.

I'm not the kind of bloke who has hobbies.

I voted "Can't afford...".

It's the nearest to the...

..."I won't shell out "vote.

There should be a "I won't buy anything off other bods if I can make it myself" option.

another vote for "all the above". but ended up going for "I like making things (anything)" as it the one i thought suited the most.

I can't vote for just one.....too many apply!

As I regularly tell my students, that is the where the skill lies, chosing the most important/relevant/appropriate  Surely one is dominant?

Nope - who says it has to be?

I do different things for different reasons.

I make furniture 'cos I enjoy it, and you can't buy what SWMBO puts in my order book, anyway.

I make tools 'cos I just enjoy making something that is both useful and easy on the eye.

And I make a lot of things 'cos it saves $$$s, and don't I enjoy that!

Aske me which reason I'm doing it for on different days, & you may get any of the above answers, or maybe another I haven't thought of, yet.....

:D

I just voted and am quite gobsmacked that 56% are voting like me, I guess the 'Just like making things (Anything) ' must be a strong underlying desire in people here.

Do you remember a thread a while back about what posters do for a living? There were a lot of office and educational types, lots of IT people, and I reckon that we all need to make or do something with our hands or we go stir-crazy. I know I need to. I'm sure that creativity is in there somewhere as well. That is why my wife understands me - she is the same!

OMG you can't make a statement like that without telling us how you've managed to achieve such harmony

Oh sorry, just seen she bought you a T5

OK so now you've established a precedent................what's the next thing on your list that she is going to buy you

In my day job a task can be done a number of different ways. You could spend all day doing it your way and someone could come along and do it very differently. Also, I only see my failures, My successes never come back. Woodworking is very different. A pice of wood is straight or bent there is no in between, only what you are happy to accept. Also, you keep your successes. In beautiful things to look at and hold. The ones that don't work out, you give them away or dump them!

Got me a T5, didn't she?

Trend or Volvo?????

Actually, I've got all 3, Trend, Volvo and Record.

Is that a Record?

I would think most woodworkers would have something by Trend and Record; and isn't ownership of a Volvo part of a teacher's contract of employment?

Along with reading the Guardian.

I dare say though, that the bit about leather elbow patches and smoking a pipe has been dropped now!
