Hi there and thanks for allowing me to join. I've just restored my first piece of furniture, a (possibly Edwardian) wash stand. When I purchased it, there was a gap between the doors and a gule mark the length of one door, which I take is an indication there was a strip of wood which overlapped the two doors. Does anyone know where I can buy half a metre of, say, 30mm wide, 3mm or 4mm thick oak?. I don't have any workshop tools, but guess if I could only buy a piece that's wider, I could clamp it in a bench and use a chisel to 'cut' it to a rough size and then use an electric sander with very coarse sandpaper to get it to the right size.

Thanks!

You can get what’s called strip wood from most big diy stores - wickes bnq etc Some also sell strips of hardwood. EBay also have multiple sellers offering off cuts of all dimensions and species which are not that expensive. Worth a look .

Thanks. All the big DIY chains only seem to sell pine, but I guess I might have something instore that isn't listed as stripwood. I'll pop to B&Q later. Also, I hadn't thought of Ebay!

Can you post a picture of the wash stand, there may be other elements of it that may be relevant to the profile/shape/size of the the piece you need.

I have a rack full of Oak ripping's, that I could further machine to size and send out, for the cost of P&P.

Thanks guys. Here are some photos. The gap between the doors is 6mm and there is 8mm between the edge of the right-hand door and the handle, but the more I think about it, I'm not sure the doors are original:
  • The doors don't seem to have been hung properly and a magnetic catch was used to keep the right-hand door shut and I would have thought the doors would have fitted perfectly and not needed a strip down to where they join.
  • The door hadle doesn't match in material or style with the drawer handles
  • The bolt set in the left-hand door fits into a piece of wood glued of nailed onto the cross-brace and is a bit of a rough job
  • The doors don't seem to match the cabinet
  • There is a hole inside either side of the cabinet just behind the doors which my partner wonders if they may have been for a curtain originally, which kind of makes sense, but I would have thought the rod would have been too thick
Does anyone have any thoughts on the points above?

Also, there is a finial either side of the splashback, but when we bought it, the right-hand one had been snapped off. I was hoping to pin or dowel it back on, but only the finial has a hole which doesn't seem to be dead centre. Would my best course of action be to glue it back on (sanding as necessary to get it to fit)?
