Thanks Clogs that's very interesting.

I got a quote about 20 years ago from British Metal Treatments and it was eye watering.

Do you know if they do decorative hard chrome (the matt finish) like you see on expensive metrology equipment?

BTW my solution to the 'gutter' problem would be to cut the thread with a gutter and then back fill it (the gutter) with braze.

Once filled, turn to size.

The guys next to me were electric motor rewinders. They routinely built up worn shafts with mig weld and turned them back to size.

They didn't heat treat the shafts afterwards.

Just my tuppence worth.
