What sort of template did you use?

A quickly made fixed MDF thing.
I'm still at an early stage of woodworking so still need to start making templates and all the other little home made products that make life a lot easier.

A quickly made fixed MDF thing.

To me a template for the table top would be a circular disc of MDF, do you mean you made a "compass" type attachment for the router as this would have required plunging but you would usually use this with a straight bit as you don't need a bearing.

^. I did indeed make a compass type jig. Screwed a hole in the middle of the piece, ran the jigsaw round first which gave about 1.5mm to remove with the router. This is where I had to sort of 'Jiggle' the router down onto the piece, not ideal but you work with what you have.
I'm making a sliding 'compass' style jig that will allow me to move the router in/out from the center of the circle.
That's what I'm doing on here at the moment, looking for some ideas.

Given the same job I would use my homemade router compass to cut a circular jig out of say 6mm MDf using a standard straight bit. I would then tack this template to the table top and use the bearing guided cutter against that.

On large radius jobs I have used a bodged up router compas with my small laminate trimmer to cut a 6mm x 3mm deep groove. I then bandsaw most of the waste away followed by the bearing guided cutter with the bearing against the edge of the 3mm groove. I used a 5.0m radius compass to get the curved back on this bench, picture B5 shows a similar process but the laminate trimmer was run against a sprundg batten to get the curve under the seat rail as I couldn't get the length of radius inside the workshop.
