I just want to an extend a thank you to David Charlesworth for inadvertently solving all my planing problems!

My P/T had been giving me some terrible snipe and the blades were very blunt and I was also getting some non-square cuts.

My problem was i didn't have a long enough straight edge or a blade-setting tool to fit some new blades, so the machine has sat idle for a number of weeks while I wasted time looking for an easy approach, none of which I wholly understood - including all kinds of jigs etc.. and I didn't want to spend more money on a tool or specialised instrument.

This afternoon I was flicking through DC's book and came across a good and very clear and understandable article on how to sharpen the blades in situ - and setup the beds.

Now, I have no snipe, the blades are sharp and some test beech (from my workbench project that I picked up this morning) was put through it and the results were fantastic!

I'm officially a happy bunny!

Ok nibbo - just for you 'oh robotic overlord', I shall add some pics this evening/tomorrow morning.

Oh, and just to gloat a wee bit, with my haul of beech this morning I enquired with the yard-guy about some contrasting off-cuts - maybe some walnut?

Anyway's, he squirrels off to somewhere in the distance, and only comes back and gives me about 10ft of 2x2 Black walnut - for gratis! So now I have some lovely wood for my wedges and other details!

Black walnut gratis blimy that is a mega gloat, I have never been offered a splinter with all the wood I have bought at yandels.

My god! I will have to visit that supplier. I have enough trouble just trying to get hardwood for a high price let alone free!

I aquired a piece of black walnut and I personally would not purchase another piece of that timber again. A timber yard would have to give it to me.

The grain on the piece I had was very coarse and breaks up at edges so I hope you have better luck with that wood than I.
The board had a price tag of £25 for a length 8x1" 8ft. long, although I seem to remember I negotiated a lower price.

Byron,

I am delighted to hear that my scribblings are not in vain. A welll set sharp planer is a wonderful thing!

Thank you very much.

I thought Senior had posted the above, grumpy old man thingy  you must have been terribly unlucky DW normally American black walnut is one of the nicest woods you can get everything in the pic below except the floor is American black walnut.

Didn't know they made flowers, candelabra and spinny turntables in ABW  - Rob

Lord Nibbo - you requested proof:

This photo shows a board before (at the front) and a board after running across the jointer after sharpening:

Thats it, yet another person having a go at my persona, I think you have all realised that underneath this grumpy exterior is just a big pussy cat.
