Thanks for the replies guys, but I have taken the plunge and used Titebond lll on the chipboard. Not flooded it, but a reasonable spread and screwed down and weighted. Prior to that today, I enforced the supports with additional timber and managed to do a little leveling with that. It feels very solid now. Additional timber bought in for shelving and backboard of plywood to mount tools on. Just need to add the 20mm hardwood edge along the front and remount the 9" vice, which was in situ, but removed to glue the top.

All looking good so far and I have some Osmo hard oil to finish it with. Just want to get it done by Christmas so that my son will have a clear space to play with his new Router ....................................... I want a play as well!!!
