Sources for Wood in the North East

I'm currently using Laithes Mill near Penrith, as that's where my Dad always used to go, but it's a bit of a trek from Durham and I could do with something more local that I can just call into rather than having to plan a day around.

Does anyone know of any good places around Durham/Newcastle?

A bit further south but John Boddy's at Boroughbridge has a huge selection of hardwoods.

Found out today J.T Atkinson's builders merchants in Stockton are supposed to be cheap as the are well set up for cutting timber and supply all there depots in the Northeast.

I used to use Arbor timber in Durham. Looks like a bog standard builders merchant but they always had a shed of interesting wood with at least one guy who really knew his stuff. Now I mainly use Robert Duncan in Gateshead as they are just across the road from my workshop and dont seem to mind shifting huge stacks of wood whist I try and find the one bit I need. Percy Hudson in North Shields are also pretty good and do a huge range of mouldings in house.

I agree with Arbor Timber ... I am only a dabbler and I found their whole team really helpful with none of that condescending scorn you often find in wood yards aim at the amateur. There is always a steady stream of the trade in there picking up stock so they must know something!

Arbor timber is a nice friendly place. I've used them a couple of times. They have some good machining equipment

I've spent all afternoon designing a router table and working out a cutting list. So long as I get up early enough I'm planning to pop over to Arbor in the morning to see what's what.
