We have got the new waste bin collection changes coming to Torbay beginning Setptember, and the food waste bin is minute and no plastic bags allowed either.

So we think after 50 years we will have one of those electric sink waste disposal units fitted.

Had a look at Screwfix and they start at £80 upto £300+ .

What do you have and is it any good?

Up this way John the tiny food waste caddy gets emptied into the garden waste composting bin.

Same here in cambs, but it may not be possible for DW if the collecting people cannot process the waste in the required manner - kitchen food waste has to be heat treated...

MIL in Taunton had a small food waste bin, but it was big enough for her as it is just for food waste...

Get those chickens you mentioned DW, there isn't much they won't eat.

Roy.

Problem is Digit the wife is frightened of the cock, so they are off at the moment.

I'm now in the decorating stage of our new kitchen.

We have a new corner sink with a Franke waste disposal and I must say it's very good!

All unwanted food items go through it. I don't want to give the impression we waste a lot of food, because we don't. But, inevitably, there are tea bags, stuff left from food preparation and a bit left over after meals, and it all goes through the waste disposal.

So, we don't now put any food products in any bins.

We have had one for many years in fact this is the second, you turn on the tap then the disposer and put/add stuff in, it works fine never blocks the drain. the internal is ridged and a plate with sliding lets call then hammers push the stuff to the ridges and it grinds it up. Is just slightly louder than you would hope. Needs the big plug hole and a electric supply and suitable switch (part 'p' its in a kitchen)would not be with out it.

I have the model below OLD's immediately above; £89 from B&Q. No Part P switch to worry about as it's an air pressure push switch (if that makes sense) that's mounted on the side of the sink's carcass. First time SWMBO has owned one and she's very happy with it. Certainly big enough for the 2 of us.

John

OK, definately going to have one, got a 15% discount coupon for Focus so will start there Monday.

What would be a fair charge for fitting the P4 type set up? or fitting time required to fit. 1 1/2" pipe already there.

Do you have a sink with the correct size drain holes?

If not, the sink will have to be replaced.

The present strainer diameter is 85mm but the outer recess goes to 100mm.

Will a disposal unit fit please?

It would be a job to far to fit new sinks (its and old fashioned double and fitted corner tops etc.

Could be wrong, dw, but I don't think it's going to be large enough.

Suggest you read this

I can empathise with your situation. On reflection, there is a lot of food waste (meat etc) that shouldn't go into compost bins as it attracts rats etc. We're very fortunate here in Herefordshire (and Worcestershire) in that we just have one green bin (or clear sack) into which anything that is recyclable goes. We don't have to worry about which bit goes in which bag or bin. So it's very simple and a truly great system. We get a bi-weekly collection of the recyclable stuff (and as we stick out bags, there is no limit on how many) and a weekly collection of the black bag. Again, no limit. I really feel for those who live in places like Gloucestershire.

I reckon that our council is very well run especially when you consider the limited revenue and sheer geographical size that they have to cover.

Morning DW

You said in your OP ' food waste bin is minute '

Up here in Mid Devon we get a 'minute' (about 10" x 10" x 8") brown lidded box to keep in the kitchen. Nice.

Food waste that doesn't go in the compost bin then goes into a brown wheelie bin which gets emptied once a fortnight by the Council.

We can also buy bags made of compostable stuff (starch?) and put them in.

Before you shell out on a waste disposal unit, I'd check what the Council will be supplying.

Cheers

Dave

I reckon the food waste box supplied will just about cope with a weeks supply of used teabags in our home and nothing else!

So the council have delivered all of the bins for the new weekly recycling service? Including the lockable foodwaste bin and two pensioners are going to fill that in a week with purely food waste?

Tom, it is 3 married daughters plus 7 grandchildren who are all frequent staying visitors especially summertime and Christmas. The gentleman who designed this I suspect was a bachelor :)

That above is the size of the food waste bin, compare to the titebond bottle. A turkey, chicken carcass plus the rest of Christmas week would need perhaps 7 of those boxes at our home. :)

The bin this week after a week of visitors.

The normal size bin for food waste, was collected every 14 days and is always full after visiting family etc.

But has Digit says get some chickens, (I suspect we will have some bonfires at our residence and help global warming along).

The hole in the steel sink needs to be minimum 85mm diameter. The fitting is obviously has a considerably larger outer diameter.
