Russia support Syria as it gives them direct access to the Mediterranean. Bosporus is open to international shipping but Turkey controls naval access.

I assume it is also why they cultivate relations with Iraq - gives them land connectivity - together with increasing Russia's global reach and influence.

Loser withdrew his 'fleet' from Tartus yesterday. Turkey won't let them sail through the Bosphorus so off they go to the far side.

So he's definitely lost his pied-à-terre in the Middle East on account of his preoccupation with Ukraine. Bit of an embarrassment eh.
