Following on from another thread, where being distracted by Radio 3 became a discussion topic, I wondered what music others would find too distracting to listen to while using sharp or fast spinning tools.

Here's one to start with:

Lovely choice. I like the St Matthew Passion a lot, but that Cello suite is just sublime.

I think I can concentrate on my work with any music being played.

Except maybe Handel and Wagner.
Mozart and Monteverdi would also be dangerous.
I will not be able to work with Verdi, Donizetti, Vivaldi or Bellini going on either.
In fact I think it would just be safer to say absolutely no opera from Caccini to Saariaho.
No sacred works at all.
Or any tonal poems.
Actually, I'll just say music is banned from the workshop.

That was excellent. Definitely deserves to be listened too rather than back ground noise.

For me at the moment definitely the baby monitor
It usually starts playing a noise about 5 minutes into a workshop session, just as I’ve got my tools out

I find the track Starless by King Crimson a worry. It lulls me into a false sense of serenity at the start but takes on a sinister note that slowly builds to a violent and chaotic crescendo by which point I must put down tools. It's a long track so if you-re only mildly intrigued, 4.28 it takes on a sinister tone, 7.56 it's all falling apart and 10.26 chaos reigns.

I don't hear the music when I am working or the machines are running - whether it is due to the noise of the machine and extraction, or simply being so absorbed in the task.

Probably analogous to the experience when driving a frequently driven route. We get to the destination without incident every time (we hope) - but who can honestly say what happened at every traffic light, junction or roundabout - green, red, stopped, length of wait etc.
