Hi,

After being harrassed by the School Fete Craft Stall boss that i only have 8 snowmen, and a few bowls for Sundays Xmas Fete ! - I threw this together last night from an Oak offcut.

Unfortunately the stock for the pestle has a knot in it, and i don't like the shape so i may discard and do a new one. ( i don't think it match's the mortar at all )

When selling things at that sort of Fete my experience is that whether I like something or not is irrelevant. As long as the quality is good the style is so objective that someone will like it. It's different but personally I like it....sort of looks reversible.

I like it. it looks good and solid, which you need for the purpose of use! IF anything I would maybe not have narrowed the pestle and just smoothed it out to the other end to make it look more solid. but I think it is fine as it is.

I agree about solid, finish looks OK, and that ball-ended pestle would sit well in your hand ... but functionally, I'd want a deeper bowl ... the large and small ones I use regularly in the kitchen are much deeper ... if I used yours I think there might be herbs or spice all over the kitchen floor (again!)

Cheers

Toby

I'd go with the deeper bowl, the mortar - which, in my opinion should be as a normal bowl, same thickness right round - but leave that thcikness at about
15 mm to give a 'substantial' feel.

Chris.

also an OAK offcut

oak isnt generally recommend for food use due to the high tannin content which can distort the flavour of some foods - better to use beech or sycamore.
