Ours is a tiny one. Tracked down the next largest but their offers only go as far as the Saturday. But I see a plan ...!

That does seem a good price. Though might pay to look around for prices for same sort of thing elsewhere to see how good a deal it might be.
At the moment for my woodburner. Preparing logs scavenged from Council land, ( with their permission ) I have a pair of steel wedges and those star shaped things you bang into the end of the log to split them. Though sometimes a bit of hard work banging away in with a club hammer. So might look into the Lidl one, two year warranty too I see.
Cheers for this.

A wood 'grenade' or 'bomb'..? yeah i got one of those too. Along with a 22lb sledge hammer  it does make light work of green wood, but doesn't really like seasoned wood.

I've been looking/searching for a while now, and it doesn't seem to matter where you buy from or who sells them, they all look pretty much the same, apart from the colour (a bit like most of the woodworking machinery you see).

We went and had a look at the ones in Machine Mart the other week, and got the guy to plug it in and demo it just so i could hear how much noise they make. Theirs are red.... Lidls (Woodstar) are grey.

I was all set to buy the one Screwfix are selling, branded as Titan, slightly smaller at 4ton, but just what i wanted. Same price as the Lidl/Woodstar model, but the Lidl/Woodstar is a 6.5 ton with a bigger capacity (longer logs), plus it looks like it comes with the stand too (M/M want a further 30 odd quid for the stand..!)

I think i can wait another week..... \:D/ :-"

In all seriousness to the OP if you are fit and able an axe is faster than a small splitter like these but they do get the job done in the end. The Fiskers X27 is an amazing axe. If you do need a machine (I don't know this one) 6.5 tonne it's a fair old force. I do contract work with a firewood processor and it's only got an 8 tonne splitter on it and can push almost anything through a 4 way blade all day long. Often think there is a difference between a Chinese tonne and European tonne though :D

Edit. Reading the text by the Woodstar says it does 100 logs per hour! That is agonisingly slow.

I split my wood with a Fiskars X27 and borrowed a hydraulic splitter from my neighbour but gave up as I could do it quicker by hand. Good if you don't want the physical workout but personally I decided not to bother getting one (maybe in a few years though!). I have a load of gnarly stuff building up though and neither the Fiskars or the splitter will touch it.

My experience of hiring these splitters is that they are bordering on useless. They will split green logs - but I can split them more quickly with an axe. They will not split wood that has ben lying around a while and will not take large diameter logs. I don't think these tools pay their way.

I have used that same model for 7 years on green wood, well seasoned sycamore, ash and beech. They are particularly good for knotty wood. I have added a knife at the user end as well instead of the flat ram, there is nothing it wont split. The largest diameter I have split is 36" wide, 12" long. I couldn't lift the larger ones on my own. Split, rotate, split again, then split the halves no problem.

With my back, I can't phisically keep swinging an axe. I split about 5 tonnes of wood every year for our wood burners.

Mine is also on the stand, looks identical bar colour but cost me £280 at the time, £149 is a bargain

If it broke past repair I would replace it straight away.

Another point is of course that those of us who saw our own firewood don't leave stuff that can't be split easily - we saw it into very narrow rings or even blocks. Or like I've be doing this afternoon - converting big hunks into turnery blanks and small pieces of firewood that don't need splitting. Nevertheless, the splitter's a good buy for anyone unable to do it manually.

Well.... went up to my local store this morning and bought one (having sold the old fridge/freezer yesterday i had cash ready to go and buy it...)

It looked like they had been 'allocated' 4 of them. I saw one guy coming out of the store with one as we were going in. And as we were putting ours in the back of the car, another guy pulling up asked how much it was and if there were any left. And this is just 45 mins after they opened

Home, spot of lunch, heaved it out the car  , too impatient to put the legs/stand on.... started splitting (hammer) (hammer) WOWZERR..!! what a tool =D>

Dunno about the '100 logs per hour' but i was splitting as fast as my missus could stack em (hammer)

Well, despite my earlier cynicism I bought one two. Our nearest Lidl had sold out by ten minutes past ten, but another nearby has a couple left, of which one was snaffled by me. Very heavy! Have not tried it yet but will report back in due course.

I got a woodstar splitter from lidl too, all sold out in 4 hours. It works great and quick enough for us, if it was speed I was after then a kinetic splitter would be on the 'to buy' list.... these guys tell you more about them and have a race... motherearthnews (dot con) /homesteading-and-livestock/6-incredible-facts-about-kinetic-log-splitters-zbcz1410

apparently no links for me allowed so replace the dot con with the necessary...
