Make the irons also a little tapered in width. That gives you enough lateral play while they still fit tight at the mouth.

The cheapest way to make tapered irons is heating them up in the forge and start hamering on the anvil. You might want help with a flattener though to smooth out the surface at the end.

My methods will start with ground sock, milled slot and sides, and probabably ground taper, then heat treat & temper. Not so much interested in cost as I'm not doing this to sell irons, but just to experiment/play around!
