Corrections:- The Canary Islands are in the ATLANTIC ocean, and canaries are native birds.
True, the Atlantic not the Pacific, and it's true that canaries are native to the Islands, and to the Azores and Madeira. However, the name of the islands is not derived from the canary bird - the birds are named after the islands.

'Canary Isles' is named after dogs, and is derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Islands of the Dogs". Two dogs rampant are on the flag and on the Coat of Arms of the Islands. (IE: On their hind legs with their heads in profile).

Then there's the Isle of Dogs in London, which is obviously named after nearby Canary Wharf, just to complicate matters. They say that the Isle of Dogs is the Isle of Man's best friend, but I prefer the wisdom of Marx, who said "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's usually too dark to read". If only the Kindle had been invented back then..
