Hi Guys

Just a quicky. I'd like to fit hoops to the handles of my new chisels. I know I don't have to, but I want to :p

So I was wondering if anyone knew a source in the UK of this type of thing?

I want them to look like this:

Any ideas?

I wonder if in the same way as I turn the occasional bit of wood on my metalworking lathe, you could turn the occasional bit of metal on your woodworking lathe?

Presumably you have a chuck, so all you would need is a cross-slide mounted onto the bed and you'd be away. Of course it may be less straightforward than I'm making it sound, but it must be possible.

That way you could turn the rings from a suitable metal, clout them around with a hammer a bit so they look authentic and job done.

Get a bit of 3/4BSP barrel (thick wall steel tube) like you use for the Jorgensen pony pipe clamps and cut some 10mm slices off the end

Good ideas. Can I get that pipe in any plumbers emporium? Will it cut with a hacksaw (I presume so).

I'm happy to turn metal on the lathe, I'm going to be turning some brass soon for the plane hammer. So either way would work.

I wonder if these hoopes have any kind of a profile to them.

Yes you can get it in a decent plumbers merchant, but its usually 3.0m lengths.

Will cut with a hacksaw, tidy up with a file.

The outside of the rings are usually slightly convex, not taken them off my Jap chisels so don't know about internally.

They're generally a D section with the curve outermost.

There is a chamfer on the underside that gathers in the timber and forces it into the hole, without this you risk the underside of the hoop cutting into the timber.

I'd be very wary of turning steel in a woodturning lathe. I've turned brass, and it's doable but not fun. I'd imagine that turning steel would probably be quite a struggle to say the least.

Can I ask. Why do you want hoops?? Your new chisels are designed to have nice turned wooden handles, why don't you use a wooden mallet? You could easily turn a nice mallet in no time and have the perfect tool for the job.

Cheers

Aled

Tom,

Personally I agree with Aled but you could try taking to Mike @ CHT and see if he can order you some 'pucker' hoops from Japan.

purely aesthetics Aled, nothing at all to do with the way they work. I just think they look bling bling. Sorry

I came across the picture of the chisels above on the Rob Porcaro's blog and just love the way they look.

Obviously, I'm not a collector, or I'd be trying to make them look like the originals. I just want a bit of bling on my 'tool wall'.

I would say if it's for aesthetics you should choose a nicer material than gas pipe. Gas pipe is a welded tube you want something more like cds which doesn't have a welded join running along it.

oh yes good point about the weld. So maybe I just need 25mm mild steel tube?

I doubt that the weld will show on the outside, the small ridge on the inside can easily be filed flush. Likewise a small chamferd lead can be filed or you could use a cone drill.

If its the bling factor you want then maybe you should be looking at stainless steel or getting them chrome plated  :D

I know you wil ignore me as per usual but Aled is right.

You have some nice chisels and now you plan to *******ise them.

It's like having a classic Rolls and then sticking an air spoiler off a Corsa on it

I'm going to take style advice from you Jim?
