Hi.

I have just moved to Portsmouth, and wondered if anyone can tell me where there might be a good wood workers tool / supplies shop within 50 miles of Portsmouth.
Obviously there are companies on the web such as Rutlands, Axminster and Yandles, and there are the outlets such as Screwfix and B&Q, but hopefully someone knows of the good old fashioned dedicated shops.

Thanks

Not sure if you're talking hand tools or power tools, if it's the latter then D&M tools in Twickenham is well worth a visit, probably the biggest collection of pro quality power tools you'll find anywhere. A little over your 50 mile limit but a very straightforward journey from Portsmouth A3-M25-M3.

Thank you. You did raise a good point I missed out on though. It is more of the hand tool stockist I would like to find.

But thanks again.

By the strangest of coincedences, I might be able to help you a bit. I was in plymouth in Feb (for the first time in my life) and was mooching about the town when I came across a tool shop (utterly by accident, Honest!) It's not exactly a woodworkers emporium, more like the now less common hardware shops, but I still ended up walking out of there with tools, even though I was on a freebie magical mystery tour! Now lets see if I can find it again on /googlemaps..

It's in the pedestrian zone on the corner almost opposite the main entrance to the covered plymouth city market, which in turn is very near the Toys'r'us next to the main A374.

If you use a gps tracker on your phone - here's the address :) The Tool Shed, 1-5 Frankfort Gate, Plymouth, Devon PL1 1QA.

and if you don't (and just because I'm getting a serious nerdrush that I can even do this....) if you are on the A374 going towards the sea drive past the sainsbury's on your left, round a slow left bend, past Toys r us then filter left and at the next main junction turn left into Union Street, 1st exit on the roundabout (Derry's cross) into Raleigh Street, which turns left into New George Street, then right into Market Avenue in short succession. Take the next left, (pretty much right after the right turn into Market Ave) and you'll see a car park. Park the car, come out the entrance you came in, turn left walk hmm 15 metres and you'll see the covered market on the right, and the tool shop right in front of you.

The internet - bloody brilliant, it's uses like that that helps me forgive - or at least put up with - all the other excrement that's on it too. (and if you do go in, tell them the guy who was on a day trip from Bristol in the big brown hat sent you :))

I can also recommend the fish n chips from "Harbourside" fish n chip shop on The Barbican, on the other side of the harbour where the national aquarium is located. Very tasty.

Harbourside Fish and Chips
35 Southside Street
Plymouth, Devon PL1 2LE

More of a builders merchants/power-tool outfit but Elliots have several outlets in your area. Not the strongest for hand tools but they do stock some.

I've bought from Elliot's Winchester in the past - haven't been for a while but they used to stock LN and Veritas

Thank you Custard.

I knew of Axminster Tools, but having moved from Bristol (closish to the Axminster HG) to Portsmouth, I was not aware there was an Axminster Tools closer to Portsmouth, than I was when I lived in Bristol.

Thank you again.
