I have decided to have a go at woodturning as this has fascinated me since woodwork classes at school. However, until now I have not had the space to follow my dreams.
I have ordered a Jet JML 1014, as it receives favourable reviews on this site and many others as an entry level mini lathe I have also ordered a starter chisel set (4 items). I intend to explore as many avenues as the 1014 will allow given its limitations on size.
My question is what would be a good starter chuck to add to the mix.

I have searched the forum but the only answers I could find were dated 2002 and 2006, things must have changed since then.

Thanks
Mick

Not being funny but being new, one set will be fine while you get going.

The C jaws will hold anything the lathe can fit (I've turned 18" platters and more in C jaws) so no worries there. The next / other set some find useful for this size lathe may be the small o'donnell jaws but they can come later. Doing worry about the internal / external jaws that look similar to engineering lathes that some chucks come with, I've still got mind in the brown paper, almost useless for general turning.

Only plea from me, when you get passed the basics, which I'm sure you will, please get used to reversing work and turning base to a finish, it can look really weird if all you work has a minimum of a 65 mm base as that is the size of the jaws!

ye but it only supplied with 1 set of jaws

Only one set of jaws (worth £22) makes the chuck £18! and you have a choice of loads more jaws very reasonable priced at some time when you feel the need.

The c jaws will also carry screw centres and face rings, a very versatile jaw in its own right.

But there is less range of jaws for the axminster Chucks which is why i would go with the record one as you can use Robert sorby jaws as well as records sets

Hi

As this is your first lathe and you may well decide to upgrade in the not too distant future, you should consider future compatability when deciding on a chuck.

To this end I would recommend getting one with a large 'body' thread, (M33 x 35 for example) and an insert adaptor to suit your lathe, this will allow you to retain the chuck by fitting a different insert adaptor to suit any future lathe purchase.

A chuck with a small body thread, (3/4 x 16 for example), would require an exsert to convert it - these are less readily available, reduce the available turning capacity between centres and increase headstock bearing loading.

Regards Mick

I bought the Jet 1014 an few weeks ago and the G3 chuck which I am very pleased with.

The Axminster offer was out of stock, so I ordered the 1014 by itself .
I also found a local supplier for the Record Supernova chuck at a £110, this came with 2 additional jaws and a screw. This will give me better upgrade potential later.

I'm not sure where you have your information from, but IMHO the Axminster range of chuck jaws is second to none.

I think the model in question was the 80 mm chuck rather than a 100 mm chuck that has the full range available. Like you, I'd have gone for a APTC 100 mm chuck but maybe next time!

i can only find 4 set for the 80 i also think they are a very basic chuck for the money you pay
