But I think you have fallen foul of rule 11.8b A maximum of 10 clamps to be used at any one time :wink: :lol:
I was hoping to pick up some more of those at the IWE next week - do you think there will be any left.

It's not very big, I'm glad you think I have such a pert bottom!
(Well, I'm not that glad...)

Anyway, the next part is in maple, and I have to laminate round a former. But maple is not exactly renowned for its pliability. These laminates are only 2.3mm thick, and I can't get them round the former by hand yet, so I'm pre-stressing them over the weekend in the hope that on Monday I can vac them round my former without stress, if you see what I mean.

Have you seen my didgeridoo? Can you tell what it is yet?

It`s an Ibex electric guitar side bending iron which I purchased from Craft Supplies Sound Wood catalogue. I`m mostly building stringed musical instruments now, but I have just started building a long case clock in American Cherry. I`m now going to start a thread covering the making of this now in this section of the forum.

Actually, I had beard for 16 years - perhaps I should grow it again and have a sideline as a Norm-a-like!

Had a minor disaster with the cradle today - not sure if it is terminal, but it certainly is a see-what-we-can-salvage job. Maple really doesn't like bending, does it?

PS That's as well as the disaster of getting so engrossed in the VBA fix and subsequent excellent progress that I forgot my hospital appointment this afternoon until it was too late - got to wait til April now Only myself to blame.

A bit more to show. I had to have two goes at the lamination. The first time I had the laminates at 2.3mm and that was too thick. At 1.3mm it was OK, but I still had to do it in stages. As you can see, the glue lines are not exactly invisible, but at least they are even and tight:

However, this is just the blank, which then needs to be shaped. Shaping reveals the different layers as feather edges, which doesn't look so nice:

So the last stage is to apply one last laminate to the outside to make it look pretty again. It's cooking in the bag (covered with a hot-water bottle and a pile of old towels, cos it's cold round these parts today) even as I type.

Steve do you have a wall paper stripper as you can use that to help with bending your maple, with the help of a steam box

Actually yes I do, but I think the main problem is that maple was not designed for bending - by any technology. I've taken it out tonight and it is not good - the last veneer is not stuck down properly at one end, so I'm going to have to do it again
I can salvage the blank though, thank goodness, otherwise I don't think I would bother.

What do mean, maple is not made for bending. Look at the tight bend at the scroll on this mandolin I made. And the maple is curly maple at that. No problem with my bend persuader shown earlier. The sides were 2mm thick as well 8)

Steve, what glue are you using ? Try the steamer as you might be surprised ( crossed fingers :wink: ).
We had an windsor chair back hoop that some restorer had taken out ( more like cow boy)and had not tied the ends to stop it spreading. He had broke it trying to get it back in, so we had to steam and repair it where it was broken.
So came the steamer and the job got done, so give it a try, what was worst that can happen is you end up where you are at the moment 8-[ :lol:
