Steve,
The goldie colour is a mixture of yellow and amber water stain. The stains I used are ColorTone which I obtained from Stewart Macdonalds Guiter Supply in the states. They`ve stopped shipping it outside the states now so even though It`s water based it must still be flamable. The sunburst was done with light brown with red added, then medium brown, and finally with tobacco brown with black added. This was all applied with an air brush and small compressor. This was my first attempt at sunbursting and it came out fairly well. But like every thing in life, practice gets near to perfect, not necessarily absolutely perfect.

Hi folks,
Well I've just about done.

And to put it into context:

Actually I was going to enter the chest of drawers, but I'd already started it. It's not finished yet either, I need better weather to spray.

The mirror is maple and bubinga.

Just a minute, Sooty is trying to attract my attention...
Yes, Sooty, what's the matter?
Say that again? What's that, Sooty, the comp was for curved STORAGE? Oh no! What shall we do, Sooty?
What's that, Sooty? You have a magic wand? OK, then let's all say the magic words, shall we, boys and girls?
Wiggley-woo, wiggly-woo, wiggly, wiggley, woo!
Cor, that's a relief, Sooty, good job you managed to magic a SECRET COMPARTMENT into it!
:)

Yes, indeed, it does have a secret compartment. It's big enough to hold a normal matchbox, and therefore anything that will fit into one, such as a ring, a small flash drive, a memory card, etc.

But if I told you where it is, it wouldn't be a secret, would it?

I'll show it to the judges, and I dare say it will end up in GW in the fullness of time.

Taking a leaf out of Alf's book (did I say book?) I need a new bench, so a book on benches would be handy!

This was a lot more work that I imagined, but I am pleased with the end result. I hope you like it too.

Cheers
Steve

Steve, very Nice - I do indeed like it.

I really think you ought to show as the secret compartment though - don't forget half the points will be awarded by the forum's members

Lovely work, Steve.
If only I was half way to finishing mine!
Cheers
Stewart

Really nice work Steve very impressive. I really like the contrast of the two materials.

Here I am thicknessing some Bubinga:

I have been thinking about getting one of those sanding machines myself, but was afraid of asking for advice in case of adverse reactions from the members . Are they any good? I notice that yours is not a Jet, which is the only make I have been able to find, where did yours come from? Can anyone else recommend alternative machines?

I am not sure it constitutes a recommendation but I have a Performax Pro 44/22 which I got when I was doing lots of big flat surfaces. It is excellent for flattening and thicknessing but I don't rate it at all for finishing. I always get long parallel scratches on the work that need removing if a finish is to be applied. I have tried changing sanding "belts" for finer and finer grades which helps but which is a bit of a pain. I tend now to use a relatively coarse belt (80 or 120 grit ) and then to plane or scrape the scratch marks out.

You do need to watch that sanding dust doesn't develop into a sold "burnt" spot on the abrasive, this can really spoil your day!

Sorry Steve, but there's a crossed line here somewhere. I was asking about the thickness sander, the link refers to the bobbin sander. :(

You are not kidding, Chris. I've just had that same thing on a 2.7m length of maple, and of course, it rapidly gets worse as the board progresses. I was about to post about it just now, to see if anyone has any suggestions for cleaning a belt effectively. I bend the roll back on itself and peel off as much of the carbon as I can, but it's an imperfect solution. I've also tried WD40 but that seems to do nothing except make it messier.

Cheers
Steve

Well done Steve very nice and the bent part with the lines makes a nice feature =D>
Ps IF I get some time ( :-k  ), I might throw my hat in the ring ( I still have time  ) :)

Steve

That is absolutely stunning, if that's you're entry I'll seriously have to think about withdrawing to save myself any embarrassment.

Well done.
