Hi,

I've quite fancy one of those spear pointed marking knives, with right and left hand edges on the one tool. Trouble is that I can't bring myself to spend the sort of money that these go for in the posh tool dealers.

I sort of think I should be able to make one for free.

So I'm looking for ideas for suitable sources for the blade. I think an offcut of hacksaw blade is too thin, but maybe not. Alternatively ideas for something cheap, not sold as a marking knife but usable as such.

Thanks in advance, Tony S

How about an old bandsaw blade.....or a Stanley knife blade? In fact, do what I do: don't use a marking knife, use a Stanley knife......

I've reground Bosch jig saw blades & mounted them in turned handles

They are useful for things other than marking

I know Harbo has made several, but no WIP shots.

Another vote for the jigsaw blades here.

The continued popularity of this design of knife surprises me - has no-one worked out it reduces the number of knives you need by half if you have spear-pointed ones?

I've often thought about making one of those marking knives, but the thing that stopped me has been the ferrule. I read an article which said that you could make one out of a brass nut - grind it round on the outside, then thread it onto the turned handle.

What do you guys use?

Pm me your address, and I'll make you a couple. 12.5mm Outside Dia. and 10mm inside by 10mm long sound OK? I have a few blade blanks that you can have also.

Thanks for the responses. I should be able to find a scrap jigsaw blade or two, that's a good idea.

My preferred one is made from a broken needle file (no I didn't break it on purpose) ground and honed to a double edge for left and right hand. The steel is pretty good and holds a very sharp edge.

If the handle feels too thin, wrap some gaffer tape round it.

I snapped a bandsaw blade today if you would like a piece?

I hope you didn't break it just for me! Yes, if you've got a bit of blade to hand then that would be welcome.

PM Me your address, I've got to go to the post office tomorrow anyway. Should be with you by Tues latest.

I broke on the weld. Probably my fault, I treated it badly ;)

I used to make them from broken bandsaw blades (courtesy of Paulm) and they do make excellent knives. I use 1.5mm tool steel now which is a bit thicker - Rob

Tony

You must think that I was very rude in offering to make DeepBlue a ferrule and blade blank, without offering the same to yourself. The thing was that I just quickly read the last post in the thread during my lunchbreak, and replied without thinking about previous posts. Sorry

If you still need the above, just PM me your address, and I'll pop them in the post to you on Monday.

Cheers

Not at all, don't give that a thought. Blanks and ferrules don't give me a problem, it was just the blade that I had a sort of block about.

Thanks anyway ...

I use pencil. I have to use specs , but i can still cut to a pencil line and shoot the end-grain.

If I need to cut across grain, I use a cutting gauge. The last marking knife I used was adapted from a small 'chip-carving' knife and it served well.

HTH John!
