Alf,

Sorry for messing about. I was just being frivolous to lighten my humdrum day, and I didn't mean to upset you or indeed anyone.

I was starting to wonder if the thread name was misspelled and should have been "Cheap Gags - and it shows"

Anyway, this thread has definitely provided me with the impetus to upgrade to Porter Cable. Girlfriend has also helped talk me into it, she's good like that :D

Cheers

This thread has been an eye-opener in more ways than one! I learned some new acronyms, and I figured out I must be the only woodworker in here whose better half actually encourages him to purchase quality tools when needed! :D Is that what being married to an artist means? Of course she needs me to make all her specialist framing for her...which is fine, too as some of them challenge my techniques and ability. Nice to experiment on pine with a real purpose before carving up a nice piece of hardwood.

On thread, I have a De Walt jointer. Bought it 7 years ago and it's solid as a rock. Cost me $175 which was a lot back then, but it's still going... Adjustable fence (0 to 90 degrees), adjustable depths etc. Even cuts surface slots for biscuit-sized hinges (although I haven't used them as I like solid brass non-mortise hinges myself). Only problem is that the exit chute is small and if I use it with the dust bag it tends to block up, so I just squirt the chippings all over myself and vac them off later.

Now if anyone can point me in the direction of a supplier (cheap) of piano strings for my next project I'll be more than happy. Or if anyone knows of a piano that's been dumped so I can cannibalise it? Regular parts are FAR too expensive :!:

Not the only one - I'm married to an artist too, and she insists on us buying quality tools - at least for the tools which she has use for 8). Unfortunately she isn't a big L-N user

So, the conclusion must be, if you want to have an easy time from SWMBO on tool purchases, marry an Artist! :D

Thanks Ike!

By the way, I found a new search engine, snap.com. I tried five searches and found what I was looking for each time without tons of dross. Even piano wire!

Brian,

If your DW is like my Elu - and apart from the paint, I think they are the same, then the exit chute can be made better by filing off the little guide vane inside (it does nothing anyway). My biscuit jointer worked far better at clearing the chips after I had done this.

Surely, if you want old piano strings, call a piano tuner

That's what I thought was obvious, too, but the one I found near me doesn't keep broken strings and only carries enough for his business -- ie won't sell them. The local piano shop doesn't stock them. I ended up buying some nickel-wound guitar strings off eBay (only £2.77 for two sets of Martin strings) which will work for what I want to do.

On the biscuit jointer -- the problem with using the dust collector is that the connector goes inside the exit chute, thus restricting it and causing blockages. Daft design. One day I'll make an adapter that goes on the outside.
