Chuckle. Maybe he could get one of each and compare them for us...

He's single handedly keeping both Lie Nielsen and Clifton fully employed I reckon. To be fair though, I think buying the best available first off, in the long run does save you money. It's just SWMBO's dont see it that way, and it's quite punishing on the wallet.

In all fairness I'm not sure he's doing it all single handedly...

You see that's why I've never really bought the "cry once" mantra. You end up crying as you crowbar the wallet open, then again when TPTB find out. And then again every time TPTB need a reason to buy something expensive themselves. Lots and lots of crying potential in my experie-, er, opinion.

Nah, there truly is nothing more soul destroying that selling the item you bought only to then buy the item you *should* have bought to start with.

E.g. I bought a crappy "Draper" wetstone grinder, when I should have bought a Tormek. Result? I ended up buying a Tormek.

SWMBO's look even less impressed when saying "haven't you got one of those already" - to which you have to reply "yes, but it doesn't really work very well, and this is what I really needed to start with....."

So I bit the bullet these days, and simply aim for a "buy-once" philosophy.

What The? I leave my computer for a couple of hours and the Internet is awash with rumours of my lottery win!
For the record (in case the Missus is reading!) I do NOT have bottemless pockets. Just a very flexible credit card.......
Back to reality, after a while the "buy the right tool first time" approach makes sense. Just justifying that approach is the trick

Well you need to promise a project, - one that arrives in record quick time - fully utilising the biscuit jointer - how about a hexagon (or similar) trinkets box, as a "practice" for the large item of furniture you tell her you are making - that way, shes gets something really quickly (and you prove you can complete some projects) and, justify the purchase.

Oh good grief. Wrong, wrong, wrong! The correct answer is always "No dear, this one is quite different" - regardless. If you can add in a long dissertation explaining how it differs, preferably taking particular care over details such as size of washers, bolt thread measurements and other eye-glazing information, so much the better. Sheesh. Amateur.

Is that as in "ordinary-off-the-street-regular-bloke" or "ordinary-bloke-on-The-Slope"? There's a world of difference...

Blimey, in my house, just announcing a tool purchase is eye-glazing enough, I don't need to go into details about what it actually does! SWMBO takes a keen complete-lack-of-interest in tool purchases (thankfully) and now the workshop is so full of to'y'ols doesn't notice another one in the background. I'll grant it is neccassary to maintain seperate accounts though

Come on ALF, you just aren't with it, any good understanding SWMBO understands the routine.

A) You choose a new tool you want

B) You justify it with the "I'll build a new bed* (insert any project here)

C) SWMBO knows quite well no projects will be forthcoming, but that provided it keeps you quiet, she'll happily go along with the little "game". It doesn't take them long to realise WW is quite a harmless hobby (costly now and again, occasionally useful and once in a blue moon you actually make something, but on the whole compared to being out drinking (or even worse on ""tour"") with the rugby lads, or holidays with the golf buddies, or hang/paragliding (or other tied to a piece of material and dangling precariusly underneath type sport (parachuting). On the whole, WW comes in quite tame really. Best therefore to let you have an occasional new "toy" to keep you quiet, and better still, she gets to reverse the tactic for a shopping spree.

Philly, just make sure the next anniversary/birthday/xmas present you buy her is a couple of quid more than the tool of your choice. It's worked for me.

Alas TPTB take a keen interest. The trouble is it's reached the point where even an innocent delivery of consumables such as finishes, Webrax (naturally) and screws gets a "hah, more tools" and dark looks.

Ah, I know the old "I need this burfl to make project blah", but you went on to say
that way, shes gets something really quickly
which threw me completely. Another false step like that and we'll have to send the boys round...

Perhaps it's a special case for your household, you being a SWMBO yourself and all.

You want to get them delivered next door, or at work, or via your folks, that way, all evidence of a delivery can quickly be eliminated.

What's a tool purchase?
I just use the ones we have lying around in the workshop! :D (Just a quick drive by machine gunning!)

Just as a point of interest Adam,
It mentioneds 6 depth stops on the literatre - I think it does 0,10,20 max and S (small) - I have no idea what the other one might be.
The 'S' refers to Simplex, and the other should be a 'D' which refers to Duplex.
Both of these are for specialist fittings such as hinges and knock down fittings made by Lamello. Have a look at Axminster page 4.62 to see what I mean. They ain't cheap though!

Cheers,

Andy

FWIW, being a relative WWing newbie, i CAN'T say
i totally agree with the 'buy the best there is straight away'
approach.
I bought my Ferm B/J off ebay for £15 (s/h)!!! Now i haven't
used it that much, but when i have, it's done exactly what it says
on the tin. I know what you're all going to say, ie, 'Oh,he's a
newbie, he wouldn't know a tail from a pin'.
Well, that's my point, a) because i'm not making any fine,
eye popping furniture at the moment, i haven't realised
the Ferm's failings, so i'm happy.
b) I'm still learning about all types of joints, hence, experimentation.
I wouldn't buy a new set of AI's and a LN dovetail saw just to see if
hand cutting is better or easier or more satisfying than machining them.
c) If the Ferm lasts 2 years before it frustrates me or blows up,
i'll be chuffed. (1 year gone already )

To digress slightly, when i started learning the bass guitar, i didn't
rush out and buy a top of the range (£2500) guitar, because i
didn't know if i had the ability to progress and you don't need that quality
to learn where the notes are and how to play them.
Now..., don't get me wrong, once i had learnt......( good job i wasn't with
LOML then!!!!!!!)

So. yes, i've got a Freud ft2000 router, but only after learning on
my Draper. And i've got a 733 thicknesser after progressing to a
level where it became a necessity. And soon to have a new T/S
fof the same reasons.

Here endeth the lesson.
