Hi guys,

Just thought I'd show ye a carving that I did approx 4/5 years back. I did it as part of a 'Furniture Making/Design' course I was doing at the time, and as time was limited (well, maybe not limited, but I would have liked to have put more time into it) its missing a few features, particularly the frame which is a little plain I think. And 'Glory' never recieved her laurel branch

Its carved from red oak and is a miniture of the clock which graced the forward grand staircase, A deck, of the Titanic and Olympic, 'Honour and Glory Crowing Time'.

It was my first 'proper' carving and I havent done all that much since unfortunately, I do however want to have another go at carving classical figures soon, perhaps a couple for either side of a fire surround!

EDIT: Erm, I dont seem to be able to post pictures

Very, very nice work - we seldom see carving on the forum, and even rarer to see work of that quality :D

Superb job.
=D> I'd love to spend more time learning to carve better. :ho2

Thanks Waterhead37 for fixing the pic.

Thanks for the comments guys, appreciated. I plan on having a go at another couple of classical figures shortly after Christmas, I want to try and make them a more more, emm.....fuller? The ones in the clock are a little 'flat'.

I shall keep ye updated anyway! Thanks again.

Good work, especially if you haven't done too much. Carving always seems a real art to me, visualizing an object hidden within the wood and then releasing it

Welcome Croppy,

Beautiful carving, how did you pick up that skill... was there a choice on the course and how long before you got that good ?

What part of Ireland are you ?

Paul

Lovely. I think those who can carve to this kind of detail have a way of seeing things in 3D. I love carving forms, shapes, bowls, etc. But this is something very different.

Paul, to be honest its just something I took a natural interest in, I've never had any teaching on the subject, or any guidance from anyone who was in the know. Just decided I wanted to give carving a go, read a few pointers, got a few carving chisels and dived in at the deep end, its the only way to learn sometimes

As for the course that I did this carving as part of, well, it was only an excuse for a course, it was a year filler and to be honest I didnt know anything new coming out of it than I knew when I going into it, it was severly lacking!

I'm in south east Ireland, county Carlow to be exact :)

Thanks also wizer, Waka and maltrout for your kind comments

I just love that! Difficult to believe that it is your first proper piece - you must be a natural. Don't waste the talent.
