Bit of a sculpture type thing......

I like this a lot, particularly the texture on the ring. I assume you used the method from the article in the magazine (Nick Arnull I think).

    Woodcut Tru-Grind problem

I have 2 - one has the same knob as LW and one has the same as the video. I think the one in the video is the old style and I much prefer it. The newer one is harder to tighten. I'm off out to the shed now so I'll investigate replacing the new know.

    Strangest order?

I was asked to make a 3 foot long penis with a ring piercing to be used as a tiller handle for a narrow boat called the Prince Albert. They also wanted a juggling club shaped one to replace the penis for when their parents visited.

    Painted bowl. "for critique"

Hi George I like the overall appearance but a couple of things that jump out at me- In photo 2 there appears to be a slight deviation on the underside of the furthest curve. I'm inclined to think that it's actually there rather than a trick of the camera as it's also visible in photo 3. In...

    Vacuum Dust Extractor Noise Output

As I discovered the other day, there's another use for the hose in the outlet. If the shed/workshop is a bit chilly you can use the heat generated by the extractor to warm yourself up - the hose can direct the heat wherever it's needed eg. up your shirt

    Vacuum Dust Extractor Noise Output

It also makes a difference what sort of space you'll have the extractor in. When I listened to a camvac at the Harrogate show I'm sure it was quieter than once I'd bought it and put in in my 12'x6' shed. There was a design for a silencer in one of the wood turning magazines and it helped a...

    Pine gummed-up bandsaw

When I had this problem I used oven cleaner and it worked a treat. Coil blade, put in container, spray on cleaner, leave for an hour or so, wipe/wash off and put somewhere warm to dry. Someone commented at the time that oven cleaner might be corrosive and could perhaps damage the blade but I've...

    sorby RS200 kt -screw thread

I finally remembered to look at what I use - the packet has 'M5 x 16 Socket Csk Screw A2' on it. Bought from Screwfix. I think I also have some with a larger socket head on them which takes a larger allen key and makes it easier to tighten/untighten.

For your critique, I thank you!!

Isn't the rule of 1/3rds just an approximation to the golden ratio? I tend to stick to approximate 1/3rds as it's just easier to figure out. When working on platters and wider bowls I sometimes go for 1/6 or 1/9 and they work pretty well too. I like the handle idea but the proportions don't...

    cabinet scrapers worth the bother?

I haven't used one on a turning for a couple of years now and it was on the outside of a vase to remove a previous finish. As the piece had been off the lathe for a while it was slightly out of round so this was the best method I could come up with - sit with it resting on my legs and scrape...

    new bowl - wife's Birthday present :) - comments?

Part of the problem with roughing gouge confusion may come from varying terminology. Most people refer to face plate work, spindle work, bowls, vases etc when none of these really describe the grain orientation, and that's what's important. Spindle work is pretty much always done with the grain...

    Green grub in log

From looking at other photos that's definitely what it is, although there appear to be a lot of different types. A couple more photos for anyone interested... Thanks Duncan

    Bristol locking levers

RS Components calls them clamp handles or tension handles. They also have lots of variety

    Weird or what.

Odd indeed! I also have a few chucks and it makes life so much easier. I originally got the 2nd because I was unable to remove a set of jaws after tightening them too much. The 3rd I bought because it was fairly cheap on Ebay, came with 2 sets of jaws and was the same design as my 2nd with the...

    Green grub in log

Thank for the suggestion. Ive posted but no replies yet. I think I'll take it in to college and try one of the id books there or ask a member of staff.

    Green grub in log

Whilst chainsawing some honey fungus infested oak logs this pm I came across this grub . It was practically at the surface in a small channel full of frass. Any idea as to what it will grow into? It's too large to be any sort of woodworm so I haven't killed it. Thanks Duncan

    Woodturning "attractions" in Cumbria

The Alpaca Centre usually have quite a bit in upstairs. A lot by Tracy Owen, some of which you may have seen in the magazine. It's at the Northern end of Ulswater and the drive over the pass from Windermere and along the lake is one of my favourites. G&S timber is next door. They sell tools and...

Aligning the pith in hollow forms

Recently I've been experimenting with drilling out the pith and then turning end grain. Once dry the pith hole will probably be oval so drill it to round and fit a plug

    suitable casters for lathe stand

I have some photos of my setup somewhere but can't find them just now. Anyway, what I have is a Nova DVR on the Sorby metal frame. Between each pair of legs is a rod that holds a board which has a castor attached at each end. Because the boards are on a rod they can rotate. When rotated...

Anyone used a website designer for a small business website?

To get an idea of how wood companies use Twitter or Facebook you're best off setting up an account on one of those. Once you're on Twitter search for any of the companies that Tom mentioned and choose to follow them. Once you've done that you'll probably need some sort of Twitter feed checker...
