    combination square woes

I also have a six inch starret which I bought new about five years ago. I ordered it from a local shop without asking how much it would be, having heard they are a good make. I assumed I would pay about £15. The guy in the shop looked really embarrassed when I went in to collect it and he...

    Small Flush Bolts

Hi, just wondering if anyone knows where I can get some small brass flush bolts (about 3") something like these ones except without the decoration. http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/C1315 You see them a lot on old cabinets but the only new ones I can find are much too large...

When is hand made not hand made?

I’m coming in a bit late on this, but just came across the thread and have a few thoughts.... It might be hard or impossible to tell the difference between individual hand-cut and machine-cut M&Ts, but that’s not the whole story. One joint doesn't make a piece of furniture. Hand tools have...

    website software

I use squarespace http://www.squarespace.com which is an online site building service. I can't recommend it highly enough. It costs me about £10 a month, and is well worth it. It's very powerful and easy to csutomise, the interface and customer service are superb. Cheers Marcus

    New plane gloatage alert

I find the simplest way is to hold the iron in a vise close to the angle you want the bevel to be, and move the stone over it in a circular sort of movement. Works for me.... Cheers Marcus

Who says Veritas Planes look Utilitarian?

Ellis has pages of stuff on both the theory and practical side of handrails. It's very complex! I couldn't begin to describe what he says about geometry, templates and marking out etc. - there is so much there and I would have to sit down for several hours to figure it out (if I could figure...

Who says Veritas Planes look Utilitarian?

Yes a compass plane would be nice wouldn't it! :) My ( slightly unrealistic!) wish list for new Veritas planes also includes: - Tongue and groove plane with a mouth, and the same heft as the skew rebate (which incidentally arrived this morning - i think I'm in love  ) - Combination...

Who says Veritas Planes look Utilitarian?

I love using Veritas tools and don't care what they look like because they work so well :P Anyway I like the utilitarian slightly modern look - reminds me that I live in 2008 and encourages me to make things relevant to the times I'm living in rather than trying to re-live the 'glorious' past...

    Discolouration across the grain

My first thought was that it had been in water at some point, although I'd be a little surprised as it came from a reputable supplier, and has been indoors ever since. Now that the initial panic has worn off I've found an off-cut with the same stain so will give oxalic a go on that.... Marcus

    Discolouration across the grain

OK, I've just been sanding some oak which revealed on several pieces dark discoloration which runs across the grain with a clearly defined, slightly darker edge: It goes deep - I planed as much as I dared without affecting it at all.... Any ideas how it got there, and if there's any way to...

    Scribing Gouges

Hi Johnny I'd be really interested to hear how you put a curve onto the wheel - do you just shape it with a dressing stick or something? Thanks Marcus
