Picked this little chap up at Harrogate, only just getting around to posting up. Many thanks to Alex at CHT for demoing and getting one from Turners Retreat as they'd run out and then the chaps at Turners Retreat for an extended demo. Did buy another plane from CHT so their time wasn't wasted, that gloatage can wait but is the result of my scraper plane quandary.

This here then is a Clifton convex spokeshave, a lovely tool to use and with a bit of flattening of the back and a few minutes honing of the curved edge on the wheel has produced a very sharp edge.

It's gloat time........

PS - does this officially mean I'm now gathering speed on the slope, Mrs IB cannot believe that I need and use 10 planes and need more

...'fraid so, welcome - Rob :ho2

Es würde so Eisenbälle erscheinen. Herzlich willkommen in den Klub.

:D

It's a worthy gloat. I bought a similar item when I made a coopered door, to clean up the flats inside. It wasn't a Clifton, but it did a good job. It was a pig to get the knack of sharpening though.

That's a question that's been raised in my house. 'Why do I need so many planes?'

But, when SWIMBO asks 'Does that wood really have to be stacked in the living room for six weeks?' then I know I have problems!

Nice gloat, see you at the bottom of the slope.

You couldn't even wait til xmas?

I have drooled over that at the shows. I don't have a practical use for it yet. But that's the one i'd go for. Tho sharpening worries me.

Tho sharpening worries me.

I find the simplest way is to hold the iron in a vise close to the angle you want the bevel to be, and move the stone over it in a circular sort of movement. Works for me....

Cheers

Yeah, there's another plane arriving at Christmas. In my defence there is no overlap between any plane so far. Just about...

If there is, I managed to haul myself back up it many moons ago!!

Actually, the analagy is a better one than you might think. Lots of batsmen I new needed to carry 5 or 6 bats around with them. I could never understand that..........I needed just 2 (the "in-use" one, and a spare in case the other broke). I've been planing for 30 years, and have only had a second plane these last 2 or 3 years. One un-branded jack plane did everything for me.......board preparation down to final finishing.

Saying that, I should get my old dad's tools from his estate shortly, and I think there are a couple of decent planes in amongst that lot.....does that count as being on the mythical slope? :D

Cheers

'fraid so Mike. I only had a few planes a couple of years ago, being a minimalist sort of woodworker...now I've got a few more  - Rob :ho2

I know, I've even had to re-sharpen them and stuff. Will finally have to get round to making a case for them next year. The question is, how many spare plane slots do I design in......
