I'm left a bit confused by that video - it isn't really a dovetail as many of us would like to think of. It's like saying "I can plane this piece of wood flat with a hand plane in 30 seconds", and then leaving the wood with twist, cupping and tearout.

It's funny 'cos it looks like a dovetail, seriously, just because you can do it like that doesn't mean he does it like this all the time, indeed if you look at his website it's clear he normally takes a little more time over them. As I said, impressive stuff.

That is my point - why bother showing us how to make a crappy "paint grade" dovetail? Why not show one of the quality joints we know he can make?

I don't know what timber he was using, but I bet it was nice and soft (ie easily compressed). I doubt it'd take too much practise to make such a joint in 3 minutes (and with saws already set up for the job).

Franz is definitely showboating and who can blame him - if you can pull a stunt like that you'd want the whole world to see it wouldn't you? BTW - how many of you noticed that the pine he was using was bowed? One way up it slid a cross the bench, the other way it stayed put. I think there is your clue to the seriousness of all this

I was amazed by his saws. I reckon he could sell one to anybody based on that demo. Of course when we get home and try it ourselves we can't work it anything like he could. Bit like seeing the hoards of people who buy routers thinking they'll be able to create fine furniture. You still need skill to use it well.

Now where can I buy a set of those saws?

Blimey! I don't spend that much on tools without motors. Sorry, I'll stick to the dovetail jig which I've never got round to using.
