ITA (Initial Teaching Alphabet). Anyone else a victim?

Luckily I wasn't, but a workmate of mine felt that the ITA ruined his chances, as he was unable to be deprogrammed. He was however exceptionally capable, but had been left unable to write with confidence. I'm surprised no one has picked this up for a class action.

Help with Huge Black & Decker Drill

Ah the good old all metal gutbuster, those things don't take prisoners, your bones will break before they do. If the bit does jam the machine keeps going round. Still have some interesting memories of them in the boatyard, I watched a big one shake off three blokes who couldn't hold it...

    HSS Bits

Pastes such as Trefolex (other pastes are available) can be very good indeed. +1 for a well sharpened Dormer

ml 8 tailstock broken - like my heart

I have a ML8 with a broken tailstock which has had a steel collar around it, and it works quite well. If they are cast alloy a good TIG welder should do it for you, if they are Mazak, 'fraid not. They do go by on the Bay so all is not lost, but there isn't one on at the moment

Workzone F clamps - have I missed them?

It must have been at least eighteen months ago I bought a couple of Aldi F clamps, bundled as 1 long, 1 short, and found them much better than I was expecting. I have been waiting ever since to pounce on their next appearance assuming like the cheapo chisels they would be going by every so...

    in My Workshop

On a more serious note, unless your workshop opens out directly on to pasture, somebody somewhere has an insecure field allowing the escape of livestock, which if it got onto a road could prove fatal for both man and beast. Or they are simply not in control of their animals. Also I suspect you...

Machining welded seam off inside surface of pipe

One option is to groove the surface of the inner tube with an angle grinder and a 3mm slitting disc this will allow the weld seam to slide along the valley you have created. Take it slow and steady, but your hole saw idea will result in tears before bed time. If you are just creating the blast...

    Cheap tools??! Don't do it!!

To be fair the carbon tap was telling you it wasn't happy trying to thread Ht bolts, and you get even less warning if a HSS tap is about to let go.

    Fantastic Tool kit offer

They wouldn't stock it if they didn't think they could sell it, and they don't need to sell very many. "Set of four superb German chisels in a hand crafted box" £1200.00. I'm just off to Lidl's, bye!

    Silverline head clamps

For my old Record clamps, I used 50 x 25 x 3mm box section as I had access to almost unlimited off cuts, and full drilling facilities. I later picked up a set of Parmo clamps, and they wouldn't pick up the same holes the Record clamps used. You wont bend 50 x 25 box very easily.

Monster sash clamp why so big ?

There were a couple of dozen in my old boat yard, handy for both timber and steel plate. For me a 6' "T" section record is a standard size sash clamp all the others are lightweights.

Carpenters Apron - new design - feedback desired

I've been wearing my old school one which I last used back in 1970. As a bench fabricator, i often used to wear leather aprons of my own modification comprising A single cord for around the waist, which ties up on the side (your own hand preferred) A cord that had any eye spliced in top and...

Essential tools/ equipment for a workshop?

Assuming you are mainly working in steel. A slow run chop saw would be more useful than a band saw, and once you get the knack you can do an awful lot of cutting with a grinderette and slitting discs. Again unless working in non ferrous for finishing grinderettes with soft pads will do a lot of...

    European Language Directive

T'is my understanding that American English is much older than UK English retaining more of the Tudor style of speech than we use. The great strength of English is evolves from the bottom up, rather then being dictated from an 'academy' down. So what is slang today will be quite normal in a...

what exactly is this used for and how ?

I have two metal ones I inherited, I thought they were just for marking out. I can see you could use them as cutting guides, but I think wood would be kinder on my chisels. Thanks all..........good thread.
