Silverline head clamps

Seen these for about 10-12 quid on ebay. Ok? Definite no no.? if you were going to source some box steel what's the minimum thickness you'd go for?
1x1" 3mm ok? Or a little thicker?
Once the bench is done I got about 10 doors and a 6" oak porch to make so these seem to make sense or am I better of holding out for a 'traditional brand' Read into that what you will.
looks unimportant as long as they hold the work for an amateur they will pass muster.

I've been recommended these by people before Marc but is it not difficult to get the pipe threaded? One of the reasons i like the head clamp style is the fact I could just get some box steel ordered an drill them myself.

it shouldn't be difficult to get the pipe threaded. but with that said, the heads have been sat in my garage for 2 years because I don't know who to ask to do so.

must look into it again.

If you are going to use steel box section for the cramp heads use the widest that will fit in the head (25mm ??) and go deeper in section, 25-30mm deep will be suprisingly flexible if you really want to squeeze something together - fine for shorter clamps but the longer you go the worse it will get. I don't know off hand if 25x40mm (in 3mm) is an available size but it would be nice and sturdy.
All depends on how long you want to make these I spose..

For my old Record clamps, I used 50 x 25 x 3mm box section as I had access to almost unlimited off cuts, and full drilling facilities. I later picked up a set of Parmo clamps, and they wouldn't pick up the same holes the Record clamps used. You wont bend 50 x 25 box very easily.

A plumber or electrician should have portable pipe threading gear in those sizes.

Pipe clamps are much more popular in the USA and I've never worked out why we don't have them much here.

Having said that, wood beams are adequate for most jobs and box section steel will be the stiffest. It is worth taking care over drilling the holes, as slight misalignments make the clamps frustrating to use. I must redo the pair that I drilled about 50 years ago anytime soon now...

I got a pair of the Record ones years ago - never use them. To get the beam stiffness you need (given these things really become useful for long clamp lengths - shorter lengths they are just too much faff). The holes you make weaken the beam further. They are clunky, a bit crude and will not close truly square/flat. If you do a lot of big clamping say 1.2m+, then maybe - but I feel they are a rather crude compromise.

p.s. Bm - you can have mine for the price of the stamp if you want them. just shout, all yours.

Thread sizes M20 x 1.5 and M25 x 1.5

Old 3/4 conduit is 3/4 BSW 55 degree 16tpi.
I'm sure the pipe clamp heads are threaded to BSP.

Silverline tools tend to be made of cheese.
Worth paying the extra for a proper tool brand (that also means not Rolson, Amtech, or Toolzone).

Little ebay update. Got a Bessey German made 1.4m clamp for 30 notes. Quite pleased with that. Got two Paramo head clamps for 15 quid each. Might be bidding on another. Dont think I'll win that one tbh. its pretty mint and still got the stickers on. collectors item not users item i fear. Still, progress!

BSP seems to be close enough unless you are using it for gas!
