Grinding plane irons square and straight?

I like to use a square to draw a line less than half a mm from the existing edge of a chisel or plane iron. It gives a good visual reference to ensure the edge is square to the tool when using a grinder. For me ,a tool rest is important to get a cosistant angle of edge. Eoin

I like your comment on 'professional experts' Ian. My uncle always reminds me that 'professionals built the titanic and amateurs build the ark...'

    Radial Arm Saws

I know there is a specified cross cut dimension. However, this can be varied considerably, depending on where you set up the fence. If you are happy that all you will be cutting is quite thin, you can push the fence way back towards the post , thus considerably increasing the cutting width.

    Making a round dining table?

I note that the centre is open in that design. Would I be correct in saying that without the centre it is more accepting of expansion/contraction? Eoin

Building a Desk - Advice Needed

The thickness of the torsion box can be varied considerably. To get it as thin as possible I would use 6mm MDF for the bottom sheet as well as for the 'infill' parts. A thicker sheet for the top would be better. Still, I think the others are correct and the steel frame does seem the most...

Building a Desk - Advice Needed

Would a simple 'torsion box' from MDF be a good option for the top. However, it would be quite thick. On the other hand it would be light, very strong and with good supports on the side it should not need any center support. As always, just food for thought. Eoin

    Biscuit Jointer Advise

I find my DW spot on. No problems to date but in fairness I'm not using it in a professional context so others may have more refined opinions Eoin

    Sliding Wardrobes

Yeah, I have to agree, the glass looks the business. I think the opaque green colour is particularly interesting in its context here. Lovely work

    Axminster website

Too right. Found Tee-Nuts in the catalogue under hardware over the weekend and can't for the life of me find them on the webpage. We could put it down to teething problems... Eoin

    Axminster website

Very interesting link. Just checked out their prices for a veritas LA Jack and a Med Shoulder Plane and they were cheaper than Axminster. That doesn't happen too often (unless Tilgear are doing a LN clearance!!!). One thing however, they were only a penny cheaper. For both planes. Which is...

    ez one system

Trouble may not have been the correct word but it looks like a situation that could easily escalate, given a miss placed comment or someone defending a vested interest. However I don't want to trigger anything so excuse me if I'm miss reading the situation. I've no reason to get involved other...

    Not many hand tools!

Holy God, Its like walking through a dream shop (retail) found in a side alley of a small town where you least expected it to be and its potentially full of bargins and/or surprises. Christmas basically... Until you realise its a work shop. I'm twitching at the thought of having to work in...

    The Wood from Hell

This feels like a stupid question but I'll have a go anyhow. With an evil wood like that, what would be the difference between the fine finish achieved by matthewwh and one that would be gotten by working up through the grits of sand paper in a very methodical manner? I'm not much into sanding...
