When I collected the three yew trees a few months ago, included were two lumps from down near the roots. They looked interesting but were a horrible looking shape with lumps and bumps everywhere so I stacked them up and said 'maybe later"

As I'm feeling a bit braver this week, I attacked one with the bandsaw this morning and then put it on the lathe. The gouge bounced off it. So did just about every other tool I have. Eventually I managed to get a scraper to put some sort of form and finish on the outside and attacked the inside. Hah! Grab after grab after bounce. All the knots and interlocking grain were fighting back. In the end, I used the Kelton hollower in the rig. It saved my wrists and in the end, did a reasonable job. There are a few cracks but as its 'rustic' they don't seem too bad.

This seems to be one of those bits of wood to which photos just do no justice. In the flesh, its spectacular. It made a change, just turning, rather than the piercing an' stuff that has occupied me of late. More tomorrow as I've just had an order for a load of goblets in cherry. Shame I don't have any so I actually have to BUY some wood

Got to say it "Yew Done Good" 'Chunky' form suits the lump of wood, plenty of character on display.

Yup, its just too tempting isn't it. Thanks for the comment. I almost turned off all the intrusions but the bowl would have been quite small and it seemed a terrible waste of some spectacular grain.

Nice one Gus, good shape and finish and I especially like the rim decor which finishes the top off very well.

Thanks Mick,

I had 'finished' it and was underwhelmed in spite of the colour which came to life after lacquering. The top was flat and rather uninspiring so it went back on the lathe and I cut the beads.

A good reason for leaving the socket on.

Beautiful piece of wood, the great finish doesn't show any evidence of the difficulty involved.

I like that a lot. Nice work.

Thanks for the kind comments. I feel a bit more like attacking the other piece now I know what tools will work on it. This one actually let go once with a big catch. Fortunately my new super reinforced tool rest stopped it in its tracks. (And yes Mr Blister sir and Chas Sir, I was wearing my face protection at the time anyway 8) )
