I put up a piece for critique yesterday and have had 91 views and 4 responses. I 'need' to know what you guys think. If you are interested enough to look please pass comment. I can cope with lousy. rubbish etc. although I would obviously prefer fantastic, etc The point is to get feedback on our work. That's the reason for putting it up as a critique.

Don't peek without critique please.

Pete :( :(

Yeah I know Paul, I am hopig that maybe I can push people inro actually saying something instead of just gawping

I recognise andtruly appreciate your comments along with those regulars such as Chas, Tem et but would really value the opinions of the anonymous viewers who never say a word in either condemnation or praise

Sorry to disappoint you but I read everything on the forum with my mod hat on, most of the other mods do this as well so you will see the read count clocking up due to this. #-o
I am not a turner, I will only comment on your work if it happens to hit the spot in my flat board brain, I have no idea on how you have made most of what I see. Apart form the spinyness of it all.

Hi Pete, disappointing isn't it, I was hoping that the word critique in the title would encourage comments about form and finish from anyone who views, not just turners.

Might I make a suggestion, and I am just as much at fault here, I think we need to show at least a few more views from differing perspectives if we are to get a feedback on proportions.

Unfortunately this leads off track into having to master more photographic/lighting technique etc. but I hope it would not lead to critiques on photographic quality etc. which would inhibit the would be posters.

Pete

I looked again at your pieces you put up for critique after seeing your comments here and I'd have to agree with Chas regarding showing a few more views from different angles.

Whenever I'm looking at a piece of work it's the form/shape I'm looking for first and then the use of timber etc. The images you put up didn't allow me to do this so I didn't free I was in a position to offer any constructive criticism. All I could say is that the timbers used were very nice.

For pity's sake, Pete, give ua a chance - some of us only get some time on Sunday to do a bit of turning ourselves, so can't afford the time to spend on here. Now that I'm at work, I shall go look and be sure to crit.

!!

We have the same problem on the photo forum I use.

When you think about it the lack of comments is understandable. You need to feel competent in the subject before you get confident enough to comment.

People need encouragement to comment. Posters like to get feedback and anyone can say if they like/dislike something. Whilst you can get away with 'I like it' as the only comment (what about it that you like would be better), saying 'I don't like it' takes more effort as you need a 'because' with a reason... or it becomes an insult.

Threads like this one do help. Those looking for comment can assure those that usually don't feel qualified that any considered opinion is welcome and wanted.

After a few threads like this the critique of photos has improved on talkphotography and hopefully it will here on the members work.

I'll try and listen to my own advice and post my inexpert opinion more often here in future :)

I feel the same about giving a critique to someones work has i too don't feel qualified to to do it,which i've said in the past.
But i do,only because i know there are very few that will.
I know nothing, well very little about the cabinet making side of the trade but when i see a piece on the forum that i like i will pass comment on it.

The piece as i see it has been made to the makers best ability, with the lump of wood they use and only they will know how it will turn out,due to flaws in the wood etc.
So to put a piece up for critique i think it would have to be has near perfect as possible, and has as been said on the pieces shown others would have done it different anyway.
Out of the 3 pieces put up for critique 2 are newbies.

I have found that looking at work on forums with a view to possibly giving a critique, whatever the item, spinny or flat, helps me form a much better appreciation of the item, be it form or finish.

The great problem I have is that if a posting is from a new starter in the subject then unless they have asked for critique I find it difficult to phrase my personal feelings without risk of offence or discouragement.

I sometimes pop in here to take a peek at what's going on. I like looking at turned projects and I admire the skills which produce them. However, I don't have any of those skills myself nor do I really have an urge to develop them (I'm happy enough breaking thin blades on thin wood :) ) so I wouldn't presume to offer a critique.

I hope nobody will be disheartened by the absence of contributions from lurkers such as me. If I ever feel I have something to say which might be of assistance, I'll say it; until then I'd rather abide by the old maxim of remaining silent and letting people think I'm ignorant rather than speaking out and proving it :) .

Gill, I do not think it is essential to be able to produce an object, or even understand how it's made for that matter to form a preference for its form, proportions or finish.

Lets face it most creative individuals have distinct personal preferences of what they like or dislike and even these thoughts can go a long way to building a consensus of general public perceptions.

I doubt that anyone on this forum would be objectionable enough to throw scorn at comments from someone who is trying their best to provide a reasoned critique to assist others.

I still wouldn't feel comfortable offering a critique of something I couldn't do myself. However, I'll try to remember to offer more praise and if I can understand what makes a piece work for me, I'll try to describe my feelings.

Mind, I'm not as frequent a visitor to these parts as perhaps I ought to be  .

It sounds that I owe people an apology. :( I had no intention of offending anyone. As a newbie who has no access to a club the only outside criticism I get is from you guys and I value it whether it is on design or technique. Again, my apologies to anyone who felt I was being too boshie.
